"Return receipt requested" is a service of the Post Office. Does this exist for e-mail?

How can I tell if one of my emails was read (or was just thrown away?)

If you have access to pop/smtp on your email account, several desktop applications have an Option to "Request a Read Receipt".

For instance, if you have Yahoo Plus Mail (19.99/year), and setup MS Outlook to pop/send your Yahoo email, you can request this option when composing mail in Outlook. Yahoo Free email accounts DO not include pop access.

On the other hand depending on which application your email is read in the person you sent it to may have the option to see a Read Receipt was requested and choose NOT to send it back.

I belong to a lot of groups and I always used to have back at the 'SENDER" spot my name, following in the next spot the title of the topic, after the sending of a message. Now I've lost all that. Why?? What's the problem? You guys have a virus in your system or something?
I would like to have that service back, please.
