It really depends upon the politician. There are those who view it as an opportunity to advance themselves and use positions of influence. Those are usually the most corrupt type of politicians. The best politicians understand it is for the service of the constituents and look to make the lives of those who they work for better. I think that some of the politicians today need to be reminded who they work for and not just worry about that come election time. They should do what is right all the time not just when their political futures are on the line.

Public service to facilitate personal gain.

I would think both. Being in a position of politics is supposed to be somewhat esteemed therefore likely to be able to get more money for the work they do. You cant have one without the other service comes with money, one would hope they are doing a good job though

a political office is also considered a public office.it is created with public trust.this is more apparent in democratic countries that the power of the government emanates from the people.therefore, a political office is for service and not for gain.

It's supposed to be in favor of the public but it's not. It hasn't been for decades now. People lie. People cheat. People are hypocrites. The people in charge take care of themselves before they take care of anyone else. Just look at all the raises Congress has voted in for themselves over these past several years claiming an increase in the cost of living, yet that entire time they have consistently refused to raise minimum wage. They make a six figure salary, give themselves raises every year, and refuse to raise minimum wage. They should not be in charge of granting themselves raises, who wouldn't approve their own raises?
