What do I need to connect another PC to my DSL service?

I have my laptop computer hooked up to Yahoo Verizon DSL. My laptop is connected via Ethernet to a Westell Model 6100 box. I also have a a office computer that I would like have connected to the DSL service, but I am not sure what I need to do that. Do I just get another Westell Model 6100 box, extactly like the one that I have connected to my laptop computer, or is there something else that I need? Your help is appreciated.

Get a Wireless DSL Router (LinkSys is one example) and connect it between your computer and the DSL modem. Connecting all of your computers to the Wireless DSL Router will allow you to have internet connection for all.

I'm pretty sure you can just call Verizon and ask them what to do

Your DSL box have only one connector plug? If you have more than 1 you only have to buy a LAN cable and just plug it in. If you dont, you have to purchase a router where you can connect more computers and use DSL at the same time.

What you need is called a router. A router splits the signal coming out of the modem into multiple connections.

No. You need to connect a 'router' or even better a wireless router to your existing DSL modem. The best companies offering inexpensive routers for home use are LinkSys, Dlink, and Netgear. You connect your DSL modem to the router with an RJ45 cable (instead of your computer). Then you can plug in several computers to the router RJ45 ports on the router using a CAT5 cable (with RJ45 connections) or access the wireless connection on the wireless router using a wireless card installed in a PCI port inside your office computer or laptop.

(Cheap wireless cards can be purchased at most retailers, but I found two at CompuUSA that work great for $29).

All you have to do is buy a router and another CAT5 cable of sufficient length. You can buy a CAT5 cable in the dollar store now... cheap but effective.

A Linksys or Dlink router will set you back about $50.

I suggest that you connect your desktop PC to a wireless router. This will provide your computer with internet access via an ethernet cable. Then get a wireless access device for your laptop- they're available with either a USB connection or a laptop card. This way your laptop an connect to the internet no matter where it is in your house/office etc. You can even take it outdoors as long as you're in range of the router.

Routers are available at http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx?&Na... and wireless adapters are available from http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx?&Na...

Hope this Helps!

My Verizon came with a Westell VersaLink 4-port router, and it can also be wireless. But we just use the ports and ethernet. I'd call Verizon and see if you can upgrade to one.
