Do I REALLY go to jail if I don't get registered for Selective Service System?

Yesterday, I got the second notice for Selective Service System registration, which said
"Refusal to register is a Federal crime punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and up to 5 years imprisonment, or both........If we do not hear from you with in 10 days, we have no choice but to send your name to the Department of Justice"
Did I get freaked out? Heck Yeah! That's why I rushed out to the post office with bunch of copied documents and sent them. What I want to ask is, would I really go to jail or pay $25000 if they don't get informed within 10 days? Is there anyone around you who actually got into jail for not with the SSS?

Oh, yes. It was just a delay, not rebel against the authority. I didn't mean to act like some hippy or anarchist. :D

It's just a scare tactic. While it's technically possible to get arrested for it, it's *extremely* unlikely. More likely, you would just lose the ability to get a college loan from the government. But in some states, when you go for your driver's license or register to vote, they require you to register for Selective Service at the same time.

"Over 3 million names have been referred by the Selective Service System to the Justice Department for possible prosecution for violation of the Military Selective Service Act (failure to register). 3 million. They have prosecuted 13 people since 1980. What are they going to do, build concentration camps? Your chances of being struck by lightning are better than your chances of being prosecuted for refusing to register. The 3 million men referred to the Justice Department are called 'hard core' resisters by Selective Service. They received 3 or 4 warning letters (bluffs) from the Selective Service and still blew them off. Millions more are in violation of the law for moving and not re-registering. This law has the highest rate of non-compliance since the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s. "

its all true, weird isn't it

well, the joint chief of staff of the military says he is looking into the possibility of bringing back the draft. lol..

Never heard of this, jsut thought you couldn't get financial aid. Way to go Bush! Who says he's not a dictator!

Yup all true..u better register when u turn 18

yes you have to but you should have been already when you where in high school you're counselors. shoul have helped you or gave you the paperwork for it . dont worry there will never be another draft.

You'd have to be refusing to register to the point of civil disobedience. If you're just dilatory or incompetent with paperwork, it would never get that far.

Yes and they will make sure that you would never be able to get into any government programs later in life. I think it is about time that the women should have to resistor also. Since they want equal rights.

Yup.

Try to get a few girls pregnant before you do, the King needs soldiers.

You need to sign up for it, although lately they haven't been reinforcing it. They will seriously do what they are threatening to do. Anyways, it is not likely that there will be a draft soon. So just sign up for it, don't worry.

If you get caught

Damn the Bush Administration! They must have come up with this. I'm sure that during the "enlightened" Clinton years that there was no requirement to register with selective service.

thats weird because i didnt register until i was 19.
i remember that day, my recruiter told me i couldnt enlist until i filled that out. the next day i enlisted weird huh

Legally you can. I have never heard of it actually happening. That sounds like something that would make the national news.

It is a federal rap. You don't need this kind of thing hanging over you the rest of your life. Do the smart thing and register.

no you will not go to jail. you will go to federal prison
