Cable internet and modem, can I use a laptop and my cable modem on any cable service conection?

could i go from the office to my home with the laptop and cable modem and hook in and it work?

If you are a small business owner I could see why you would want to move your modem. I'm not sure if you would have pay for access on both places. You might if the cable company has to make a connection for you in a cable box, but if it's readily availabe on the line you shouldn't have to pay twice.

ISP's use your mac address as stated above, but where I live, it is a database. When you try to get an IP address, the first thing the ISP does is check to make sure your modem is in thier "allow" database. When your cable modem contacts the database, it will assume you are at home. If an ISP has available internet access on the line, your cable modem should connect both at home and in your office.

The answer is , yes, you could... but you would have to set different system preferences for your home and work.

Why would you want to hook your cable modem at office? They would have their own Internet infrastructure. Beside what would hook the cable modem into? HBO?

Cable modems require a cable Internet data pipe connected to them. Also the ISP uses your Cable Modem's MAC address to authenticate the device. Cable Internet infrastructure is fixed in nature and not mobile.

For mobility, consider going online using a PCMCIA GPRS card. In India, Reliance (CDMA1x2000), Idea/Airtel/Hutch (GPRS) are good wireless Internet providers. I hear a lot about Sprint in US.

Your Wireless Internet Operator may include the required hardware in the package. So dont buy anything in advance.

Yes the laptop can, but the cable modem would require you to have internet cable service at both locations.

the MAC address of the Cable modem is attached to your Cable account. If you move the Cable modem it should work, however there are many factors. Cable Companies use different - but similar systems. To aquire the mobility that your query suggests you would have to contact the cable company. However if there is a "hot spot" that your WiFi on your notebook can conect with you can get on the internet that way, with out the hassle of moving your Cable modem.
