My work set a new driving policy last week, and now people know about my DUI. What can I do?

I work in the IT field and in the past we were able to drive our own cars to off site work areas for system repairs. A new policy was recently set in place. Me and my four co-workers were asked by the company for a copy of our drivers licenses for insurance purposes so we could drive company cars instead. I was sent an e-mail from our in house insurance guy asking me not to drive any company autos because of my previous DUI.

The next day my boss asks me about the DUI, he tells me that the in house insurance guy had inadvertently copied another manager and the office services manager in the e-mail about my DUI being the reason I can't drive a company auto. The HR manager is now making everyone who knows about my driving record sign a non-disclosure agreement.

I've worked six years at this 400 person company and have developed great relationships, it pains me that a stupid mistake years ago is still having an effect on my life.

What if anything can be done?

They are letting me continue to drive my own car for work related things off site like in the past. But I feel like the damage has been done and that all my co-workers now know of my mistake that occurred years ago. I am embarrassed to go to work and feel like I'll be forever judged at this work place. I love my job, but I wish this never got out. I don't think it was right for him to e-mail my coworkers. Now people are having to sign non-disclosure agreements..

You can't make it go away. Anyone reading past newpapers would know. It happened . The company made a mistake. You sue, you can forget about moving ahead in that place. References would also contain a blemish . Live with it and drop it. After a while noone is going to go out of their way to use you fault to justify any of their own. Can anyone say they've never done a stupid thing in their life? And there are a lot of liars out there.LOL, and you work with some too . Do your work and do it good. Good Luck.

This is a breach of your right to privacy under the Fourth Amendment. Unfortunately, you cannot do anything about people knowing, but you can sue the company for breach of privacy. This is a VERY serious breach, and they are pushing the non-disclosure agreement to try to appease you. Don't fall for it. Get a lawyer and sue. It will likely settle out of court, but you'll be a lot richer because of their mistake. Good Luck!

PRetty sure that your DUI was on the police blotter report. So its public knowledge for anyone who wants it.

here's the deal...anything you do in your private life can pop up in your business life. (arrests, convictions, bankrupties, credit history, MYSPACE, etc etc etc).

So First of all...you said people are having to sign a non-disclosure about you....well, why do these people know about your dui...if you are now so ashamed of it? why did you not keep your mouth shut about it to begin with?

Second---the company has a right to protect it's assets and that means their vehicles. That's why you are no longer able to drive their vehicles...will they allow you to drive yours still?

Third...take a long hard look at what is going on here...Hr is in involved, your boss is asking personal questions-which you do not legally need to answer......it appears you are headed toward a pink slip eventually...and the reason will not be your driving record...they will disquise it as something else.

bottom line...."what can be done (you asked)?" stay out of trouble - quit drinking and driving, and learn to behave yourself...maybe even join AA.
also - if they do allow you to drive your own vehicle and you have an accident...a physical and a blood test to test for drugs and alcohol will immediately be orderd.
