Why am I not getting any calls back on my resume??

I am a 23 year old with a few years experience in office work, customer service and basic accounting. I have been applying for office jobs like crazy and not a single one has called me back. The job I am currently at originally told me they almost didn't hire me because they thought I was overqualified (and they said this after I'd been there a year so they weren't just saying it to be nice). I don't understand why no one is calling! I'm a good employee, hard worker, never been fired, experienced. What's going on??

It could be that you are overqualified--that puts a LOT of people off. I have had a hard time supporting the part-time teaching addiction with other work (college part-time faculty get low pay and NO benefits). I have had a LOT of lip over my ed level, etc. They pretend you'll leave quickly. Well, those who can't cut the job will leave--it's not that hard for me to do office (or other work) and if the environment is decent, etc. I will be there a LONG time.

So you may want to take SOME of your skills off the resume--maybe whoever was honest enough to tell you they nearly didn't hire you could help with that. That you UNDERSELL yourself is NOT dishonest--they are going to get more than they bargained for and should be grateful.

Second choice, can you add a few more skills and apply for a HIGHER level job?

I would guess as you're sending out resumes that you want to leave where you are (or get a second job), so maybe you can't afford to ask the question I suggested before. In that case, read the requirements for any other job carefully and meet the basic ones and don't put anything else. You should not lie during an interview, but the point of a resume is NOT to get the job, but to get the interview. THAT should lead to the job.

If you have to leave where you work now (moving?) you could try a temp agency which could lead to full-time work--they get a fee so they don't mind and you would have tested out the job first.

Make sure your resume is also just ONE page, free of errors, easy to read, some standard format, etc. Sometimes people look for something picky so they don't contact you and even though I've done proofreading, I don't fool myself into thinking I won't miss some error at times.

Try to network some as well--PEOPLE get you jobs more than SKILLS do. Sad, but true.

Good luck.

where are you?
how is the hiring economy there?

are you applying for the wrong jobs?

resume written poorly?

how many is "like crazy"? 10 with no callbacks in a poor hiring economy might not be unusual.
