Microsoft Office OEM?

Are Service Desk Editions of Microsoft Office the same as OEM versions?

Meaning of Service Desk Edition:

Found this on an ebay auction where someone phoned up Microsoft to ask what Service Desk Edition meant.

This is what Microsoft said ...

"The Microsoft representative put me no hold for a minute and checked on the Service Desk Edition

packaging, returning with the reason for the different packaging was because this product was custom

packaged for retailers 'Service Desks' - to provide the same product in a smaller peg hangable box, thus

the label 'Service Desk Edition' - to be a Retail product advertised to the public at service counters for

customers to upgrade with. If you look at the photos below, you can see the plastic attached fold-out

hanger on the back. Although the product does state "Designed for installation from an authorized

reseller." - the Microsoft rep. confirmed that 'Designed for' means just that - it is not a requirement,

otherwise it would say 'Must be installed..."."

The Service Desk Edition is identical to the retail packaged version, and from the ones I've seen

has the identical part numbers. Just simpler packaging.

Original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, is a term that refers to containment-based re-branding, namely where one company uses a component of another company within its product, or sells the product of another company under its own brand. OEM refers to the company that originally manufactured the product.
