Do I have any chance for getting into Ivy League colleges?

I will be senior next year. So far I have the following things:

-4.2 GPA in a highly-competetive school in Texas. A GPA of 4.6 is required for getting into top 10% in my school. I'm guessing that makes me part of top 20% or top 25%.

-200 hours of voluneteer service serving as an office assistant in a University of Texas grad school.

-3 years in varsity debate team. Debate is counted as an honors class in my school. While I'm not a very good debater, debate happens to be my passion.

-no clubs/sports. No officer positions.

-haven't taken any SAT or subject tests yet.

I am really unsure if I can get in, because I'm hearing stories about people who have done brilliant stuff and got rejected from Ivy League colleges. :-/

It seems like you may be able to swing it because your GPA is great, and I am sure that you can do well on ACT and SAT, but you need to consider why you would want to go to an Ivy League school and which one.

Ivy League schools are very "club-like", and you have 2 parties attending: the mega-rich and the super smart. Both groups know which segment they represent; geeks and snobs. Personally, I do not favor the Ivy schools because I have been with those people before, the mega-rich, that is, and I never liked being with them. If you are not wealthy you may feel ostracized.

My brother went to an Ivy Law school and graduated #9 in his class. He does very well now, but nowhere as well as his classmates who walked in already connected. It can get you into places that you wouldn't otherwise gain entrance to, but it may take generations before your progeny are considered part of the group.

Snobs. What a pack of dill-holes.

It's really pretty simple -- you need to blaze the SAT and ACT, and you need to demonstrate some leadership in something.

If you are paying your way, you have a better chance of getting in (as opposed to if you need aid/scholarships).

No clubs/sports is going to look kind of bad. It depends on how well you do with your SAT/SAT II, and your essays. If you do well on those, your chances of getting in increase.

These schools are highly competitive, and no one is 100% what they look for when selecting new students.

Do you have any Ethnic, disabilities or rural area situations that can put you into a disenfranchised type of catagory.

Short of that they look at kids from Alumni, kids with super high SAT and grades and the disenfranchised and make up a list. If you're below the cut off you are put on a waiting list.

Remember, SOME PEOPLE do turn HARVARD down and when they do you float up the list higher and higher.

I hate to tell this...but it's unlikely.

You're dealing with picture perfect students that get rejected to these schools.

But why do you have to go there?
