SWAT officers invade home, take 11-year-old at gunpoint

Nearly a dozen members of a police SWAT team in western Colorado punched a hole in the front door and invaded a family's home with guns drawn, demanding that an 11-year-old boy who had had an accidental fall accompany them to the hospital, on the order of Garfield County Magistrate Lain Leoniak.

The boy's parents and siblings were thrown to the floor at gunpoint and the parents were handcuffed in the weekend assault, and the boy's father told WND it was all because a paramedic was upset the family preferred to care for their son themselves.

Someone, apparently the unidentified paramedic, called police, the sheriff's office and social services, eventually providing Leoniak with a report that generated the magistrate's court order to the sheriff's office for the SWAT team assault on the family's home in a mobile home development outside of Glenwood Springs.

According to friends of the family, Tom Shiflett, who has 10 children including six still at home, and served with paramedics in Vietnam, was monitoring his son's condition himself.

The paramedic and magistrate, however, ruled that that wasn't adequate, and dispatched the officers to take the boy, John, to a hospital, where a doctor evaluated him and released him immediately.

It is absolutely and without a doubt the most deplorable thing I have read in a while. What is this communistic Cuba?

We do have rights in this country and the freedom to determine our own children's needs. Para Medics are quite capable of determining whether their child, or any other family member needs hospitalization or not.

You do not even need those credentials to live your life and determine if your own child needs more care than you are capable of giving.

Just when did we give all of our rights to the government? I am certain, this family did not need this type of intrusion. It brings back the horrors known with Hitler and his control over people.

Do not allow big government intrusion into our lives. Some of the candidates want to control your health care. Will they dictate when you will see the doctor and how often, and if you may or may not have surgery?

Do not allow some slick talker tell you he/she is going to raise taxes, or take something away from you for the common good.

Re-distribution of wealth is another way to take away our liberty and our freedom. When you take away a man's labor, [earnings] liberty is lost. I don't care if that man is wealthy, middle-class or poor. It all starts with economics and goes downhill from there to socialism.

Exactly what the Democrats have to offer.

Why was the paramedic called in the first place?

The parents should never have allowed the paramedics access to the child. If the paramedics forced their way in, then they should be sued.

Yes I have also seen instances where people have no warning and police rush into their home because they say several 911 calls were dialed from the home.

Every one was asleep and no calls were made from the home. No one could produce records but in the end it was the same, there had been reactions by the home owners to the state of the country in the past. The man had given speeches on the patriot act and so on.

The health of a child must always come first, as they are not PROPERTY, but perhaps sending an officer or two might have sufficed rather than a bloody SWAT team. However, there may be more to this story than meets the eye. Sounds as though the father resisted getting medical care for his son and fact is, a paramedic is not as qualified as a physician to do so.

Edit: We are 'sheeple' because we do not agree with you? Give me a break, mate. I am aware of the legal precedence - but do disagree with the conclusion of the case. A child is not PROPERTY - and not receiving proper medical care should be considered CHILD ABUSE.

I am from the north of Ireland and several times during the Troubles woke up to RUC surrounding my bed, their weapons out. You don't know the meaning of police state.

The only way to protect youself is to be knowledgable of your rights and be vigilant as this incident you describe is not an abberation...we must keep alert.

How dare they the parent is the guardian of the child and and if the father didnt want the kid to go to the hosptial it is his choice, if anything swat should have knocked on the door and spoke with the father, i hope the father sues the hell out of them

The "police state" has always been here, people just weren't aware of it, until the issue of terrorism was brought into the forum.
The FBI, CIA has always had the right to enter anyone's home, without permission, if you are suspected of committing a crime against your country.
They don't enter a citizens home for the fun of it you know, and "terrorize" innocents, just because they like to look at faces afraid. They enter because they have GOOD cause. (Not to say there aren't some mistakes).
A question for you, please?....

What if no one entered a suspected terrorists house, and they were in fact guilty of trying to kill you, and your family amongst hundreds of innocent Americans? Would you be angry at that, for America not protecting you, or would you just be DEAD, so you can't complain, anymore?

I guess it's just another day in Communist America. I think it's sick knowing that the SWAT team came in their for one reason: To pick up that child and take him to the hospital. Just like me, since I DO have the right to decide if I want mainstream medicine or alternative healing...it doesn't matter. Regardless, it could have been handled a lot better by the SWAT team and the paramedics. All the sheeple here who disagree should have these instances happen to them so they can see it for themselves. Anyways, good question.

EDIT: Notadumm, what are you thinking? Just because a father refuses mainstream medical treatment for his son doesn't mean he is killing his child. Sometimes, healing happens at home more so than it happens at a hospital, since we feel more comfortable and loved at home. I hope you rethink what you wrote.

What was wrong with the kid? Was he really sick, I think that is pretty relivent. If I feel that a child could die or be seriously injuried by not going to the hospital and I call online Medical Control (A doctor at the hospital) and they agree. Then (with the police there) I can take the child to the hospital against the parent's will.

Sounds like the kid needed help. I don't blame the police. What kind of "father" refuses medical treatment for his son? This despicable scum bag deserves to lose all of his children.
