What tax can I claim for working from home?

I am an employee, I get paid my weekly wage as per normal except I work from home rather then an office. What and how much can I claim for tax? ie electricty, laptop (that i bought and paid for myself which I work off) rent etc.
Any help would be great! Thought i'd get geared up for this years tax returns.

You should consult an accountant for the last word on this, but as a rule, you can take a percentage of the cost of the house and utilities based on your office space.

Let's say your house or apartment is 1000 square feet of livable space. (This does not include closets, the bathrooms, garage or basement and attic.) Let's say your office is 10 ft. by 10 ft. or 100 square feet and this space is ONLY used as your home office and nothing else.

The home office space then is 10% of the total house square footage. You can deduct as a business expense 10% of the rent or mortgage, and 10% of relative utilities.

You can also include as business expense your computer, any business equipment (fax machine, scanner, telephone), related books, magazine subscriptions, office supplies including ink cartridges for the printer, and your desk, chair and related office furniture (bookshelves) if they were purchased to set up the office for this job.

You can include professional memberships and dues, related travel and travel expenses, and mileage for your car if it is used for to go to the home office, meet clients, etc. If you buy lunch or dinner for a client, that is a deduction too.

It's important that you keep copious records.

It's a good idea to consult with a CPA so that you can get credit for every possible deduction. I'm sure I've omitted some things here.

The previous answer is incorrect. Employees cannot claim a deduction for their home rent. And you cannot claim expenses for travelling between your workplace and your home office or entertainment expenses such as buying meals for your employer's clients or business associates.

You don't say what you do for a job, but the fundamental rule for everyone is that you can claim a deduction for an expense which is directly incurred in connection with earning your income to the extent that it is not of a private or domestic nature. The range of potential deductions and how you can claim them dependant on your individual circumstances is too much to write here.

Remember - you are not claiming "tax"; you are claiming allowable work related expenses to deduct against your income so that you have a reduced taxable income, a reduced gross tax payable on taxable income and therefore a greater difference between the tax you have paid out of your wages already and what you owe on your taxable income... which results in a tax refund.

Read the Taxpack about work related deductions and find out more at the ATO website:

EDIT-
Whoever gave me a thumbs down does not have a clue. You cannot claim rent unless you are running a business from home, in a separate place of business which is not domestic. If you are an employee, you are not running a business. Whether the home can be regarded as a place of business or whether you simply find it convenient to do work from home is a matter of individual circumstance to be considered before determining whether a rent deduction could be allowable. Before claiming rent as an employment deduction you are well advised to discuss your situation with a qualified tax accountant and to seek a private ruling from the ATO.
