Vasectomy and Sedation/Anesthesia?

Why won't vasectomy doctors offer the option to perform sedation for vasectomy operations, and right there in the office? That is to say, give the option for the person to be completely asleep while the operation is performed, but without having to rent out a hospital room.

I realize vasectomies are relatively quick operations but it astounds me that even simple wisdom tooth extraction operations are done with sedation in-house, but not an operation where one's very sexual organs are being cut. That blows my mind, and is the single reason I have been unsuccessful in having a vasectomy done.

I've tried 3 times, to no avail--I'm far too sensitive down there to successfully "go the course" conscious, yet no doctors will sedate "in-house"--you have to pay thousands more to have it done in an operating room in a hospital. Simply ridiculous.

What gives?

By the way, I tried 3 times to have this done, and all 3 times the doctor had to call it off, they stated I was way too nervous for it to work and a hospital setting was practically mandatory for it to be possible. One even refused to see me again because they didn't want to waste their time with someone who wouldn't be likely able to go through to completion. All the "it's no big deal" responses are of no value, sorry. My nervousness can't be helped, and I find it appalling that you can't get sedation in-office when you can for things like dental work.

Ask your urologist if he/she will call in an anesthesiologist to sedate you. They might have to move your procedure to a surgery center, and you might end up paying a LOT more, but if you're that uptight about it, it's worth a try.

Seriously, though, have you seen childbirth? Women do that frequently without sedation or anesthesia. Vasectomy is the least you can do for the woman who went through all of that for you. It's such a minor operation - be a MAN and suck it up for the 15 minutes it takes to get it done.

You are what we call a "bad candidate". If you fear the surgery that much, you will likely suffer from "imagined side effects" for the rest of you life. You are one of the few cases where I would say, don't bother getting a vasectomy.

I can tell you from experience that getting a vasectomy is not a big thing. When I was in the Air Force I just went into the Doctors office and bent over a table. The doc deadened my nut sac and made a 1/4 inch cut, pulled out a tube and tied it in tow places and cut it and burned the ends. Then he put 3 stitches in the cut and 20 minutes later I went back to work and worked a 12 hour shift that day. What I'm telling you is it isn't that big a thing to get nervous about.
