Signed 6 month lease, notified landlord I was leaving at the end of my lease on 2/3 lease expires 2/29?

In Minnesota,

So in case the title did not explain it enough, I am out of my lease in a few days. I notified the landlord that I did not intend to renew on the 3rd of the month. Now they are claiming I am liable for April's rent because I didn't give sufficient notice.

I do not have access to a copy of the lease at this moment, but it was a generic lease agreement purchased at Office Depot.

Am I liable for that months rent?

I should clarify that it is MARCH's rent that he is holding me liable for.

I'm ASSUMING that your lease calls for a 30 day notice, and you gave a 29 day notice...

So that is why they may be saying that you would be liable.

Its hard to tell without actually seeing the lease, though.

Possibly. Your lease could require notice 30 days before the first of the month. At the very least, you're liable for rent though 03/04/2008.

Check your lease and state landlord-tenant laws.

Are you breaking your lease? If the lease expires on 2/29, why would you be liable for April's rent, you didn't sign a lease through April? I guess I don't understand why any landlord would have a lease expire on 2/29 and then have any expectation that you would pay an additional two months rent that you didn't sign on for. Maybe if you elaborate about it, because it doesn't make sense.

Ok now with the clarification, I still don't see how you can be held liable your lease has expired, is their a clause that says you are a tenant at will? I have never had it happen that I was expected to pay rent for months not covered under my lease contract. I know some require 30 day notice, but its expiring, I know my lease agreement says I must inform than 30 days in advance if I wish to renew, but that if I don't I am considered someone who is moving out, but I'd really have to see the specifics of your lease, if it states that when your lease expires you become a tenant at will, and they require 30 day notice, then you would be liable for March rent through the 4th of March at the most.

The standard is 30 days notice, however in some places you need to give 60 days written notice to vacate (regardless if it is the end of the lease or not)

Contact you tenants rights board, however chances are that you are on the hook for the rent as per your local laws.

Did you give 30 days notice? NO.

You should have given notice BEFORE Feb 1 (January 31).

You owe March's rent.

Unless you needed to give 60 day's notice, then you owe March and APril. Read your lease.
