How would i get out of my lease?

I rent an apartment in texas. I moved here to attend college and this was all i could afford. My fiancee and i moved in in august. Feb. 15 my car was broken into in the complex, then the 25 thy cae back o take my car. It was nothing special! It was a freakin black dodge neon.....standard.....no power locks, windows or tent....NOTHING! anyways the woman i spoke with initially was very nice and from te corporate office, she said she would speak with her regional manager and then hopefully the vice president about me getting out of my lease. She never called me back, so i spoke with the office manager PETRA, and she was very rude and unconsoling. i told her i need to speak with someone about getting out of my lease,my car was stolen. she said that is no reason for you to get out of your lease! i then got angry(as i was waiting for the cop to show) and said not even for a stolen car, are you not responsible for your renters safety? she said no, that's your responisibility. someone help me!

I should not be scared to walk outside of my apartment even to check the mail, but i am. I don't know if the person is in the complex or not. they found my wallet stuffed in the brochure box on saturday! i walked outside to go check on the rental car last night and a man jumped out from behind the trees! now what!?

Many communities are placing greater obligations on landlords for many issues, including tenant safety.

I am a landlord. I own rental property in Cupertino, California. In Cupertino we have many more requirements placed on us than in other jurisdictions.

I expect that in Texas there are very few requirements placed on a landlord, however it is possible that even in some parts of Texas they may be catching up with the times, especially in a College Town.

I think that it would be a good idea to at least interview some attorneys in your area to see if there are some local requlations that might help you.

In California Tenant safety from crime is a serious issue that a landlord ignores at his peril.

It is possible that in some parts of Texas they may be catching up with the rest of us.

I recommend that you interview several local attorneys.

Unfortunately, she's right. You are at the mercy of the complex.

For a specific answer to your question you should consult legal counsel with whom you can discuss all the facts of your case. Answering this question does not indicate an attorney-client relationship. **

You need to speak with an attorney! this isa simple matter in connecticut ... but i don't know the laws for texas.
Good Luck!

The only way you can legally break a lease is to die. Then there is no one to pay the lease. You will need to stay (or at least pay) for the remainder of the lease. That is why you sign a lease. It protects you from the landlord raising your rent. And it protects them knowing you will be there for a specified amount of time. Next time just rent month-to-month. Your landlord is not legally responsible for a criminal stealing your car.

Petra is right.

You are responsible for your own security....

You are bound by the terms of the lease. While you are certainly free to move out, you will be liable to continue paying rent until the current lease expires.

The easiest way to break a lease is to become an undesirable tenent.. Keep it with in the law and allow the complex to break the lease for you.. It's very simple to do...
