Financial Aid problems?

My Financial Aid office keeps sending me forms to fill out for proof of my parents income and everything which is perfectly fine. But, they sent a note that said if my person I am filing under is a grandparent, I need to provide proof of guardianship. Well, I am 21 years old, I don't have a guardian. I take care of myself, pay my own rent, pay my bills, I have no cosigner on anything I have like my apt. and loans. My mom kicked me out at 18, I don't know my dad, and my grandpa is the one I file under but he doesn't necessarily provide for me. I do everything myself. So what should I do on this stupid proof of guardianship if there is no such thing? I have lived on my own for 3 years now and get no support from anyone. What do I need to tell them?

Also, no one claims me. But I'm not married, in the army, have a child, or my parents aren't dead.

Can you prove anything with your high school records? Was the place where your high school diploma sent to them?

I would speak to the financial aid office. Each school has an application for appeal in order to change your status from dependent to independent. It requires a good bit of paperwork , but it would make you eligible for more grants, loans, etc. It sounds like you should qualify. Some schools give you a very hard time about this. Be prepared for the burned out staff member who heard students and parents lying a multitude of times. Get out copies of your federal forms, apartment leases, car paperwork etc, anything you can think of that may help prove your case. If your mom would write a statement saying that you have been on your own financially since 18 and your dad was not part of your life, it might help, too. I know when a good friend of mine provided that to the financial aid office, it was a done deal.

If you read the Fafsa instructions carefully, you will discover that you can't file your fafsa under your grandfather unless he legally adopted you before you were 18 years old. Unless this happened, you will need to correct your fafsa information to include your mothers information (and her husband if she has one).

It doesn't matter that she, or anyone else, doesn't provide for you. Until you can answer YES to any of the dependency questions, you will have to give your moms income.
I would contact the schools financial aid office and tell them what you did. Ask they if you should correct it on line with your Pin or if they want to correct it in their office. Either way, you will need to contact your mother and get her tax forms.
Good luck.
