Who is a non dependent?

hi i am currently on the council housing waiting list with my partner but no success as yet im actually getting quite desperate for some where to live right now that i am thinking about going down the privatly renting route, now i get disability living allowance and income support so i am entitled to housing benefit which would pay my full rent my boyfriend only works part time as he cares for me but he doesnt get paid for this by dla but i do get care componant which means that i pay any one who cares for me so i pay him. i spoke to the housing benefit people the other day and they said that i would not get housing benefit if my boyfriend was to live with me as he isnt classed as a non dependent (non dependents are allowed to live with you) but when i spoke the the dla office they said that he is a non dependent but the housing benefit people arnt living any of it does any one have any advice

Non dependents are classified as

adult son, daughter, relative or friend.

Boarders, tenents and sub tenents, and joint tenents are NOT
non dependents.

Your partner would have to be classified as a friend for non- dependent status. You are probably deemed to co-habitating and thus your boy friend does not qualify.

For full information google in what I have just done. Dependent Deductions.

Click on the first web site and this will give you so much more information than I can here.

In conclusion all I can say, if you are not co-habitiating then your boy friend is a friend and he would count as a non dependent. It seems to me there may have been a misunderstanding about your boy friend's status.

Good luck.

nice explanation, but what is real question? sounds like your boyfriend can claim you! as dependent on taxes since he cares for you!

A non dependent is some one who can claim for there own money.

Anyone who lives with you and is over 18 who is not your partner, dependant child, joint tenant or sub-tenant, is called a "non-dependant" and they are expected to help towards your rent. An amount is taken from your Housing/Council Tax Benefit 鈥?even if you do not get any money from them. The amount that is deducted depends upon the non-dependant鈥檚 age and income.

A non dependant is somebody living in your household who is not dependant on you

E.G a child over the age of 16 (or 19 if still in full time education)
A friend
Lodger etc

A dependant is... a partner, who is not earning, child, that you are responsible for, under 11 or 19 in FTE, somebody that you are a carer for,

A dependant is someone you provide for i.e., food, warmth, shelter so a non-dependant is someone who doesn't rely on you to provide any of those things. Get the situation clarified as I think you are under some misunderstanding.
