Some pay pet rent...some don't...manager picks..?

Here's my dilema... I moved into my current apartment in June of last year. At the time we did not have pets, but my daughter met some friends here and they had several cats. She asked me if we could get cats and I said no because I didn't want to pay a deposit or pet rent.

Her friend said they have several cats and they didn't pay a deposit or pet rent 'cause her mom is friends with the office staff.

She said the office wouldn't charge us and we should just go for it. So, I did. I adopted two cats that are kept inside & are both fixed.

Here we are 6 months later and one of the ladies from the office seen the cats sitting in the window and sent me a letter requesting $300 deposit for each cat and $15 a month for each cat.

How is it fair for them to pick and choose who pays and who doesn't? They also have a no dog policy and I've seen several dogs here at the complex and have even mentioned it to them and all they say is, "We don't know anything about anyone having dogs."

The apt. walls are smoke stained from previous renters. The bathroom walls are nasty from smoke and the sink has burn marks from cigarettes. Yet they are worried about pet hair & people with pet allergies? There are people out there with allergies to nicotine as well, but guess that's ok.

This retards from managemant have a lot of power, i payed my conndow off...so i own it! and i made lots of changes in it! few week later i got letters that i should paint this and that, and my window sheads are the wrong color....i cant even park my company car close to my place, i have to park it half a mile away...and the security guy lives across the street but he can park his company car right in fron of his house...he even has a Tow away zone sign....i hate this idiots! i hate them so much i went to talk to a lowayr.....and there is not much u can do! u will probably lose and eventualy u will have to move out!
SO...u can try fighting, but most likly u will lose!

Well i'm sorry i didnt give u the answer u would wanna hear, but thats the reality...u will end up spending lots of money and lose in the end! i just find miself in your shoes...i think i'll move out soon cuz im tired of this old farts! Report It

Unfortunately it is their decision how they want to run their building. They can charge different amounts for each apartment, they can charge pet deposits for some and not for others...anything. Frankly, it's not really any of your business what other tenants are paying or not paying.

Your lease said that you needed to pay a deposit for pets. You shoud not have acted under the false assumption that you wouldn't have to if that is what was already agreed upon.

If you are satisfied with your apartment and don't mind paying the rent for it, that's all that matters. If you're unhappy with having to pay for a pet deposit, you should have either not gotten the pets or will have to find a new place to live.

how old is your daughter? did she check with the management first to see about being charged? did you?

IF i was in managemane I'd charge you too... plus back rent for getting cats without talking to me

ypu knew there was supposed to be a charge and just assumed you'd be special and not get charged? Or just assumed your daughter was more responsable than you and asked management?

It's fair because it's their property. If your lease states you can have a pet with a deposit...then that is what must be done. Landlords/prop. managers are not required by any law to treat tenants equally.

I don't think that it is the who, but the where. Some complexes allow only the elderly(for companionship or health reasons)to have pets. Also, some apts in the complex have new carpet or have been refurbished and they dont want it messed up, so location and size of your apartment comes into play.

I had a similar issue. I wrote a letter not to the manager of the complex, but to the owner and explained how tenants are treated differently just because of how friendly they are with management. They waived the monthly pet rent, but I still had to pay the deposit. I was fine with that because I didn't mind paying the deposit, it was the monthly rent I didn't want to pay.

confused confusion, that's because you don't own the property...if you did, you would know how much it costs to replace carpeting & drapes that the cats have stained or sprayed.
Just because you spayed your cats, does not mean they do not spray.
Other tenants are allergic to cats and the LL has to change out the cpt to accommodate the new tenants if they have allergies.
Personally I'm allergic to cats, but I do not rent to animals, just people.
If you bring in other factors other than humans, you get dunned by some LL's, but there are others that don't care and you should see their apts.
If you state your business up-front, you will have better success with the costs then just moving animals in without the permission 1st at time of signing.
Personally, I may chg a sur-charge to the rents at onset, or a deposit of 500 for cats and 250 for dogs that are small.
Large inside dogs will be 1000 or dogs of a threatening manner will be not allowed on the property and that could be the deciding factor that gets you the rental or NOT.
Don't condemm the LL's for wanting to keep their properties clean and well-kept...unlike the answerer that can't spell or has an ongoing beef with the LL's and other owners, consider the properties that they reside and what the inside must look like.
If you want to live in a dump, do not consider the owner an their wishes, and soon you will see what I mean.
