New puppy Question?

I am moving into an upstairs apartment soon...and my landlord says i can have a dog. She's a nice lady and said the only thing is that she doesn't want the dog to bark because the apartment is located above her office...her hours are 9-5....

I am getting a German Shepherd puppy and she is well bred as the breeder is VERY responsible and i have been communicating with her for several years...I have NO next door neighbors as it is a mainstreet loft...

The landlord is pretty friendly and doesn't seem to care much what we do with the place...she's letting us paint and buy whatever we need to clean the place and is taking whatever we spend off of our first month's rent. Since she seems laid back I'm sure she realizes that ALL dogs do bark a bit...Otherwise...do you think i'll be ok?

ADD: It is a decent sized place..there's room for the dog for sure...and there is a big yard in the back

I think it will be o.k. because you have no neighbors, the dog might just bark when someone comes to the door or if he or she hears a loud noise. There is also a collar you can get that when the dog barks it gives them a little zap it's suppose to train then to stop barking, if it becomes a problem, the only thing with the collar is I never used it, for my dog but my sister in law did and she says it's fine, but I would get more info on is, if needed. But German Shepherds are smart dogs so I think you will be just fine. Good luck with your new puppy!!!

so your landlady is okay with the dog barking now? Oh & no that is just a back yard greeder not a responsible breeder at all. People are so gullible! haha Good breeders don't breed FOR a serious fault & there is no health or temperament testing of any consequence -would sell to anyone and did... Report It

i think it will be ok..

try putting a sheet over the cage so the dog wont bark or take the dog out from the 9-5 hrs

I'm sure it will , since she is so laid back with everything else I don't see her getting mad at a occasional bark from the dog .
good luck

How big is this apartment? Thats a bid dog for a little place. What about a yard? if it's her business, in a downtown area, is there any place for the dog to run.

I honestley think you may want to consider a smaller dog for your living space.

yes it sounds like it maby sound proof the floor

Don't assume anything.

I can't stand barking, and I'm a dog trainer! Different people have different thresholds for barking tolerance. What you think is acceptable may be driving your landlord nuts.

I don't permit dogs to bark needlessly (which, in my books, is really any time other than when I ask for a bark). I don't see any reason for a dog to bark at people walking by or every time the telephone rings.

Complaints about barking dogs are epic. When people leave their dogs to bark outside, they're often home, and have just tuned out the barking. The rest of us aren't so lucky.

Some dogs are more talkative than others. So while I won't begrudge a dog a bark here and there, to me it's like a car horn. Once or twice to let you know they're there...okay. 15 or 20 times in a row; or 3 times, every 10 minutes; or at 5am...well...that's not okay.

I suggest getting familiar with training techniques to curb barking, so you'll be well-prepared if/when you do get a dog. Also know that a new dog (adult or puppy) may bark a lot during the adjustment phase. You may want to plan the dog's arrival with vacation time, etc. unless you work from home or are otherwise at home most of the day.

Please know that complaints about barking often lead to problems with neighors, eviction, inability to travel with the pet (you can't stay in a hotel with a dog that barks), poisoning (the dog), and surrender to an animal shelter.

Well, if it going to definitely be a problem if the dog barks, get it one of those collars for baking.

i think ull be alright if u keep the dog calm most of the time and belive me i had a sheperd pup once and if u startled her or scared her in anyway she would bark but as long as i kept her calm u would barly notice her

Same question, same answer:

You need to confirm that with the landlord. No responsible breeder would place a puppy with you until it was totally confirmed and even then, there are some big questions that would make me really wonder how 'responsible' this breeder is allowing a breed like a GSD to be an apartment dog with someone who knows so little about dog.

Did you think that reposting the question a day later would change anything?

i think u will be fine unless she or he barks alot,if u lett him bark alittle every once in a while its fine but when she or he does alot, thake him or her for a walk and come back later, she will probobly think uve calmed it down
