My mother purchased an $800 money order from the post office for her rent and the money order was lost???

This was for her rent for the month of December. The money order was through the Post Office. She took the stub into them about a week later to fill out the 6041. The lady at the counter took the stub and never gave it back. How can she get her money back without that stub? Is there anything that can be done or is the mistake of a Postal Worker gonna cost my mother $800 and another $800 that she had to make up for the rent again?

If she filed a 6041, she should get her money back from the government. I don't know how long it takes for her them to process a 6041, but I would think she should get it back within a matter of weeks by mail in the form of a government check.

There should be a record in their system too of her purchase.

Replacement of Lost or Stolen Money Orders
To replace a lost or stolen money order, a customer will need to fill our Form 6401 at a Post office and pay a fee of $5.00. After the USPS completes a payment inquiry on the status of the money order, a replacement can be issued.


If she filled out the 6401, then they will eventually get the money back, but maybe not in time for the rent.

They need stub to stop payment? Tell her to go to P.O.and ask person who took possession of stub.

Never relinquish a stub or receipt without making a copy of it. You will get the refund, but the government is very slow at processing these things, maybe 30-60 days.
