Can the post office require me to rent a box at the post office ?

I would rather have a mail box at my house but the local office does not want to deliver to me.I have neighbors with boxes but they are on the main road where as I'm on a residential street. It seems to me that I should have the right to have it delivered to my house for my convenience and not for theirs. Is'nt that why we pay postage?

That is not why you pay postage.
While the post office does operate on its own. They are financially self sufficent.

However, when it suits them, as in your case, they will tell you what their regulations are, and you must adhere to them, and if you dont like it, you have noo recourse to change it.

If someone parks in front of a mailbox, the post office can refuse to deliver mail because they were unable to drive up and deposit the mail in the box.

I would reccomend that you place you mailbox on the main road with your neighbors.

The short answer to your question is that the post office can make up any rules that they want.

Apparently they can, but maybe you can appeal. I got stuck doing the same thing once, too. Doesn't seem fair, but I guess it just depends on the boundaries of where they do deliver.

No that's why you pay taxes. But if they have no delivery to side streets, then you are stuck.

Besides the government doesn't own the postal service anymore. they went public like a corporation quite a while ago.

our post office will not deliver to anyone who lives within a 1/4 mile of the post office, but they give you a free po box. the only time we would pay for one is if we could have delivery and choose not to.

A lot of residential areas, if not most, only have the group box. You shouldn't have to go to the post office, but there's no rule saying they have to bring it to your house.
