Can I use my 1year olds s.s. survivor benefits to pay my rent or other utility bills? |
I can never get ahold of my s.s. office or their hotline. I would like to know what is allowed and what isnt. Some examples would be helpful. PLEASE HELP ME! If the child is living with you, you are supposed to use the benefits for the child. Rent and utilities benefit the child if he/she resides with you. SSI benefits are not meant to be saved for college. They are for the child's immediate needs. So, the answer is "yes." Food, housing, utilities are basic needs. That's the purpose of the benefits. This is an issue that is best left up to that SSA. IMHO I think that the money would be best spent in a Roth IRS to ensure the child has a college fund when s/he is old enough to go. That money is used for housing, clothing, all n all taking care of the child. You are suppose to use that money for any of those things. Yes you can. You can use the money for whatever benefits the child. If paying your rent is whats important use it. If keeping the heat on is important use it. Just don't use it to pay for these things all the while not having a job. If you do that you suck. This is money you are drawing from was generated by your deceased spouse's work history, it was thier money paid into the Social Security Fund. You can spend it however you want. I am not an expert, but I presume the child lives with you? Ergo, he/she needs a roof over his/her head and heat, etc. I think you are on safe ground. Now, it you were using the money to support a drug habit..... YBIC As others have said, you are required to use the money for the child. That means you can use the money to meet the needs of the child: housing, food, clothing, medical care, etc. I beleive that money is meant as a form of child support. Housing, clothes, utilities, allowances, etc. But if you don't need it then save it for future education or other expenses. |
