Is it illegal for someone to open mail that has nothing to do with them?

The reason I am asking this is because I have to have my mail go to my moms house because I dont have the money to rent a post office box and because my mail never comes to my place for some odd reason. Well every time I go to pick up my mail from her place it is open and she knows whats in it before I do. Is this illegal? Is there anything I can do about this? Who can I go to? Im worried that when my check for $150 gets there she will find somewhere you dont need id to cash it and she will spend it. I also have a credit card going there someone please help me.

Yes it is definatly illegal. This is called fraud.
Sjhe can be fined or given a jail sentence.
You should advise the senders of the letters that your mother has been opening them. They will often put a code on the envelope and then will know if you or her opens it.
She should not open your mail anyway as a matter of common respect for you.
You should try to talk to her about it and ask if she would like you to open her letters, ask her how she would feel if it were done to her!
You could try to ask that they make any cheque payments crossed and account payee only.

yes

Yes its illegal. The mail belongs to you, not to her. Regardless of whos house or mailbox. And as for your check, if she forges your signature and cashes it, she can get into trouble. Call your local police department or a lawyer in your town and ask them these questions. Or go to your post office and get a post office box. That way your mail never makes it to your moms.

Its illegal in the U.S . You know you cant press charges on your mom so you better find a new place to recieve mail !!P.S my mom lives with us now and calls me cuz she wants to open my mail and gets mad when I say I'll get it when I get home. She is just SO bored I think she needs things to do

yes, and messing with the mail is a federal crime, not a state crime which means no plea bargaining, and if you get 3 years, you serve three years, no time off for good behavior (The federal government has plenty of money to keep people in jail for as long as they feel like it, state prisons are overcrowded and have limited budgets)

Yes, it's illegal. Federal offense.

That is a federal offense. She could get jail time. Mother or not that is wrong and you should tell her that!

It is very illegal. You need to get the mail coming to your home and your problems with be resolved. What type of mother would open her adult child's mail, cash a check and spend it?

yes it is and Federal charges can be brought up against the person(s) doing it when caught .

It is not only illegal it is a FEDERAL OFFENSE.
I did not know this, until I was told as I was delivering invitations to a party I was giving at my condo, that EVEN, going into another's mail box without the owner's permission is punishable by Gov. law!
I could leave it if I was not given permission, sticking part way into the box, BUT not completely inside it.
Or behind it. Anything but completely in it as the mail man may do!
But opening mail that is not yours, is a criminal offense. Go to the post office and ask for instructions in how to deal with this problem.
You may not want to mention your mother getting into your mail. But do ask for options in order to best protect what is yours.
You mention that your mail has to go to your mom's for some reason . . have you not a mail box where you live?
Or is it dangerous a place to leave it?
Nevertheless, you need to make an arrangement with the Postal Service in order to protect your interest and relief the anxiety of not knowing what will happen to something received while you are not there at the time it is dropped off!
Good Luck!

I would get a postal box at a post office if trust is a issue with you and your mom and its going to her house.
It is illegal to open mail that isn't for you.
It costs a little bit but better to just not allow her to have access to it.

yes, they could be fined or go to jail

well since its her house its legal
the only thing you can do is to change the address

No she cant open it if it sent to her house. It has your name on it.. It is a federal offense, and if she cashes you check that is fraud. If someone cashes it without and id, I would sue them.. Some mother to open your mail and steal your money.. Post office boxes aren't that costly.. Get one for just a few months at a time if you can
