How to cell towers connect to landlines?

how to cell phone towers connect with their offices? Do they run lines ALL the way to their regional offices, or do they rent the local phone lines from the local providers?

cell sites transmit data electonically (TDMA or GSM) to a central office or LEC (local exchange company) who then send the data through land line. No physical lines are needed to transmit data to the LEC. Cell companies either purchase land for cell sites or borrow other competitors networks to "hand off" (pass the call from one tower to the next) the call while a person is in commute.
