What is our sheriffs office and police department for?

We had a burglary,told the pd who did it,had a full hand on window for prints,said we were wrong,was just kids.WRONG We had a burglary at rent house,deputy drove by,stopped in road,said make of list of things missing will be back,never came back.Caught theif ourselves next day,called deputy,while she was confessing,my husband/ex-officer,asked if he was going to read her rights, deputy said"are you really going to file charges,I will have to take her to jail.Had over $5,000.00 property taken off my truck,deputy called theif to see if he really took it.never filed.Called sheriff office about kids on go karts,dirt bikes, no helmets,on county road,asked her not to put it over the air because they had scanners,she said"well at least they will stop". This has been over a period of about 10 years.They continue to ask the county for more money, at least they can drive new cars and look good.

to fr chuck, my husband is x-officer,daughter is a police officer, I am a retired dispatcher, 911 and emergency mngmnt instructor.to jan h i do not make frivolous calls,and out of the incidents i mention was over a period of about 10 years.most officers are polite and courteous, as long as they don't have to make a report, that would be work,I took hundreds of calls that were frivolous to me,i took calls that were from someone who called on a regular basis,and let me tell you,i never-ever let a call go unanswered.I never had a call come in that an officer did not respond to, that is their job,they don't like it then they need to find another job.every person that called me helped to pay my bills,at the time they called it was important to them,it was their life and they needed help,and i sent it.the time will come when you will see what I mean.Police are similar to Doctors, we can't solve the problem ourselves, we have to depend on them. to largopirate-thanks

They are there to give tickets. That's where they make quota and get coupons for steak dinners. They don't want to work harder than giving tickets. That's hard work.

Yes, drive new cars and look good seems their only use. They don't even like to roll their car window down to talk as they will lose their cool air.

poor you,ive seen it a thousand times.all police officers want to do now is wear the uniform and possess the authority.the day of the cop who cares is over there maybe about 10 pecent on each dept left.the sad thing is the higher ups are supporting the attitude to keep the officers out of conflicts the supv,s may need to respond to.also the courts arent helping the police much so everything is going to hell in a hand basket.so when you want something done make alot of noice up the chain of command and you may get satisfaction.sorry things turned out this way.

I now live in Mississippi, I have been here for 6 months and have seen exactly what you have just said. The sherriffs here do absolutely nothing. They tell you that you have to go to the justice building to file charges through the court clerk and then a warrant will be issued. I find that to be useless as I did just that over 3 months ago to 3 people for assault to me and my children and they have yet to be picked up and put in front of a judge. Not to mention our judges here are not real judges who passed a bar exam, they are ordinary people who think they know the law. The sherriff here also tell you they can't arrest or ticket someone unless they see it themselves. Well, if they came when they were called and not 2 hours later , they would see it. In New York, the town I am from at least the police do their job for the most part.

You did sorta ramble and I am confused over how many incidents you are discussing.

But normally on a burlary they will not do much investigation, if the fingerprint was on the outside of the window, it is not really evidence that can be used, it only proved they were on the outside of the house, not the inside. ( not what you want to hear but that is the law)

Normally the police only read someone thier rights when they are going to question them. Miranda Rights do not refer to private citizens questioning someone. Only a person who is in custody or is a suspect and are being questioned.

You're probably not going to like this answer and I guess that's ok. But from reading just this - you complain about helmets, kids, etc etc etc etc. Kids break into truck and take stuff. You complain more. It sounds to me like too much complaining means they are left with reasonable doubt and perhaps too many calls from one place. Here we call that a busybody. You don't like the kids not having helmets YOU go say something. Calling an officer to do it usually in between more serious calls is not the way to win cooperation when there really is a call.
And regarding the one in Mississippi I can't let that go either. The officers I'VE met in Mississippi have been professional and very nice. Two years ago I went to a concert at a little town in south Mississippi with some friends. During the show over to our left a fight broke out...this room was CROWDED. The two guys fighting pushed each other up into a booth and were heading for the sound system, oblivious to anyone else in their path, when officers converged...PROMPTLY - running over tables when they had to in order to get things broke up. No one else was hurt - could have been a bad situation and the friends and I still joke about it. Later that night a friend and I were stopped at a checkpoint by some of the officers in that town - no problems with them either. Last month I went to another show (same artist) in Tupelo and again met local officers there working the festival -- all were polite and very nice but no doubt they were there to do their job. Just because you don't SEE things like on TV doesn't mean things aren't getting done. It's really unfair to slam the majority because of a problem with a few. They work in conditions most wouldn't want to - and from the reaction I got when I commented to the guys in Tupelo they don't hear nearly enough thank yous. They provided a safe place to have fun without being so much overbearing that it squelched that. I didn't see ANYONE given a hard time in ANY way and I didn't see local or county ever "doing nothing". I have no doubt if there would have been a problem they'd have been on top of it. Being able to balance a crowd to allow having fun with security is not an easy feat and officers are called to do that in many places across the US.
