Your security deposit?

I know that according to the NYAG's office the typical security deposit for an apartment is one month's rent, I'm just wondering if you could tell me what you paid for your security deposit? I'm applying for an apartment asking 1.5 the rent, which I find a bit over the top, although I realize this is within their legal limits, my credit is very good and I'm just pissed. So I'm just taking a little poll. Thanks:)

RENT SECURITY DEPOSITS

Virtually all leases require tenants to give their landlords a security deposit. The security deposit is usually one month's rent. The landlord must return the security deposit, less any lawful deduction, to the tenant at the end of the lease or within a reasonable time thereafter. A landlord may use the security deposit: (a) as reimbursement for the reasonable cost of repairs beyond normal wear and tear, if the tenant damages the apartment; or (b) as reimbursement for any unpaid rent.

New Jersey allows up to 1.5 times the monthly rent so that is what most landlords charge in that state. I checked several buildings in NY on apartments.com and they were all 1 months rent.

I do not live in New York nor do I know what their laws are...I will take your word for it.

If what they are asking for a deposit is within the law, then you must decide how much you want this particular apt. Is is worth it to you?

Sometimes paying a little more & being really happy with what you have gotten is worth much more than the hassle of continuing to look & not even knowing if you will find it.

Good luck

I have seen and charged a variety of amounts. I have seen from 0 to 2x rent. It depends on the unit, the items inside, past rental history, animals etc. I think that 1.5x is within reason.

It may not be fair but it looks like it's legal. Just be careful because many times you never see that deposit again. They can always find "deductions" to eat up most if not all of it.
