Job Dilemma - Advice Please?

I work for a Telecoms Company as a Salesman, my job involves some pressurised sales techniques and I don't particularly like doing what I am asked to do. I am successful and earn fantastic money, I have a new company car with a fuel card, a 5 bedroomed company house and mobile & laptop. I was visiting a potential customer the other day and he offered me a job with him, as a salesman. He offered me a better basic salary and a company car with a very very generous fuel allowance (4p less than maximum allowed by law)
To take the new job would mean I lose my house and would have to rent myself. But also taking the new job would mean only going into the office once a month, and just working by myself.
My present job involves me telephoning control to report throughout my sale, I have to call before I go in, after the demo, during the paperwork and after everything is signed. I don't enjoy doing this as it upsets the customer....
Should I take the new job?

Go for it you have nothing to lose. Good luck.

You know the answer, sounds like you just need validation. Do it.

I would take the new job if you haven't got a lot of financial commitments and a family relying on your current position

you should go for the new job there is more to life than material goods, and if you are unhappy in your present job you will always be wondering what if ??

think if it would make you happier? would it give you more free time? make you happier at your job? If the answer is yes then go for it. Perks are only good if you are happy and add value to your life. hope this helps.

Well, only you know all the details of the two jobs. However if you are fed up with your existing job............

All the high pressure selling, and phoning in throughout
the sale make the existing job sound less than good.

Sod the company house- it will NEVER be yours. You get a mobile phone with this job, BIG DEAL, they only cost a couple of hundred quid. You get a laptop, well it aint going to cost a fortune to buy your own..

Your existing job sounds like the job from hell, I just hope the one you have been offered is not the same.

I hope the Yahoo name you use is not your real name. All sorts of folks read these posts!

It's not what you do in life you regret it's what you DON'T do in life that you end up regretting. DEFINTELY GO FOR IT! Good Luck x

Go for it! It sounds like you would be ethically and professionally happier in the new job. Good luck!

ps: You aren't the Tom Lambert who went to BGS, are you?

Its a big decision and you must weigh up the choice of leaving a well paid and secure job , even if you dislike some of the practises , against moving and maybe finding the grass is not always greener .
You don't mention partner and or family , so choice is even more important if you have these .
If you are single , and you dislike things so much then I would move and see how things go . If as you say you are a good and successful salesman then you should be able to land another job if the new one does not work out
If you do have family then perhaps you should stick out a bit longer and perhaps at the first opportunity disc cuss with your boss how uncomfortable you are with some of the company methods of sale
Good Luck

First of all ask yourself the motivation for moving. If this customer had not offered you the job would you have been thinking about moving anyway ? What do you know about the new company - sure u don't need to call in but how else do they treat their employees ? Don't rush into this, first of all try and constructively challenge your existing company about their procedures of calling in etc. As a good salesman you have a great chance of convincing them they will get the same result if they leave you to it. If this does not work then start to drive your own destiny and pro-actively look at other employers. This new one may or may not be the right employer but seriously question if this chance remark by a potential customer is how you want to shape your future career path. You only mention the basic pay what about the earning opportunity. The fuel allowance only becomes beneficial the more you travel but it will never make you a fortune so do not rely too much on this. Consider all aspects ie - bonus, holidays, insurance cover, pension contributions etc. Good luck and let us know what u decide.

I have been in that situation many years ago and if it was me I would grab the bull by the horns and go for it, remember you are only as good as last weeks business with corporate companys, the more you sell the bigger the target you will end up having to reach.
