PR internship - how can I negotiate?

I have a 6 month internship at a PR agency coming up. They're fairly small, but have some great clients and seem successful. They want me to work full time, but are only offering 拢650 in wages. This is not enough in my eyes; I have rent, train fare, bills etc to pay. Can I ask to come to the office and discuss wages, or do I have to just accept it?

By the way, that's 拢650 a month!

Internships are often not paid at all; you're lucky that you're getting anything.

Because there is a lot of competition for entry-level jobs, especially in popular fields such as PR, no, you can't really negotiate. If you don't want to work for that sort of money then that's fine, but they'll quickly be able to find someone else who does. I advise that you start the job and just take what they're offering, and then assess the situation when you're half-way through the internship and see if you think it would be appropriate to ask to discuss it.

My company does not hire many interns, but the ones that we do have get either:
- reimbursement of travelling costs and 拢5 lunch allowance per day, but no payment at all for doing the actual job (for those who are currently studying)
- 拢8 per hour pay and no reimbursement of any costs (for those who have just graduated)
This is in central London and obviously payment will vary by region.

Is that 650 for the whole internship or a week or a month?

Frankly, internships bother me. They are supposed to give you some work experience, but too often they just provide free labour. At least you're getting something.

I would ask to clarify compensation. Do they provide help with transportation? With lunches? (Is there a company canteen?) I know some companies in London won't pay more, however, they will help with other costs, like tube fares and free or subsidized lunches in the company canteen.

You don't have to accept what they're offering, but then they don't have to increase it either. You can ask for more, but you better be able to make your case. 'I'd love the opportunity to work here, but at what you've suggested, I am stuggling to keep my head above water. Is there any other opportunity to increase this so I can afford to intern here?'

See the movie "The Devil Wares Parada." In less than one year the job-from-hell got her in the door she would have never had.
