My roommate broke our lease and left the country!!!!?

I moved in with my roommate last year. We both had our names on the lease but she left and went back in her country, she is foreign, because she got suspended from school. We already had issues before like paying for bills (she would tell me that she was too broke to pay for it), and the bills are under my name. I owe the cable company and the electricity company but anyways to cut a long story short, I have 6 months left. It's a two bedrooms and it is too expensive for me to pay alone. The leasing office doesn't care they just want the full amount even if they did let me pay only half for last month's rent, they are having me paying the other half in installments, but I havent signed any paper concerning that. Anyways I CANT come up with that money. I've been actively lookin for a roommate but I havent found any yet. My rommate is gone, she left the country. Should I sue her? Is there a way that I can legally be allowed pay only my half until I find someone? I'm so screwed...

Usually you can pay a penalty and break the lease. Just tell them it is a matter of some money or no money, they get to pick.

Collecting from somebody in another country is not easy if you can do it at all. Try contacting an embassy from the country and speaking to people there.

Yes Leguly you can sue her for the ammount she is needed to pay, sence if im understanding correctly she has not paid you or the landlord yet. If the bills are under your name then there is a problem, that you have to pay for the bills. I know the situation is tuff, but the person that left for her country needs to pay up, so go to a court and have a cort orderd sappina delived by her goverment, that way if its preapared by you, and sent by the courts to a lawyer there, and deliverd too her by police or any form of law inforcemrnt she willl have to pay or pay the time to give you the money in jail.

since you signed the lease, you are obligated to pay the full amount. Looker harder for a roommate.

As for suing your old roommate, since she is out of country, it would be very difficult and probably quite expensive to try to sue her for her half.

good luck to you

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do...sorry! I just wanted to tell you that,so I could say stop looking for a way out, its not there. You're only options are to pay the bills on your own or find another roomie. your apartment staff doesn't care(believe me I have been there) And you can't really sue her. Signing the lease with both names doesn't matter-makes you equally responsible. And I guarantee somewhere in the lease it states that should she leave, you would be responsible. Maybe they could move you to a smaller apartment(if available). Oh and you know, I just thought of something else. When I moved in with my boyfriend, the added me to the lease....they wanted proof of my income to make sure if he left, I would be able to cover the costs. Did they do this with you. If not they are at fault....and maybe they could let you out of the lease and move out or something. I feel so bad for you. Good Luck!
