Can anybody explain what one has to go through to get an unemployment check and what the process is?

I lost my job (laid off due to minor company complications) and I need some sort of income to make the rent on my apartment. What do I have to do/where do I have to go/what is the process of getting an unemployment check? Is there a local office? Do I have to pay the money back? Is it difficult to qualify? What do I have to do to qualify? Is there a website?

Please answer these questions so that I don't have to move back in with my parents. Thank you very much.

P.S. I am 19 and live in a small city in Texas.

In Ohio, you just log onto the unemployment website and apply online. If the employer fights it, they will call and let you know how to proceed with your claim. There are lots of hoops, but just keep jumping through them because they will issue you backpay from the date you were let go, regardless of how long it takes to get your claim approved.

You have to go to the local un-employment office and apply. In order to know if you qualify, they will let you know how much you will receive weekly.
At 19, I don't think you have worked long enough to get too much money, so you may want to start making plans to move in with someone, if not your parents.
Best of luck to you

Laid off....you should get unemployment, if that is what you must do. Call the unemployment office!!! Your company will not offer this up to you, because they are the ones that have to pay most of it. You have to have worked there for a certain amount of time, and you must prove that it was not your choice to leave. Just a note though....LOOK for a new job!!! Getting a job, WHILE you are collecting unemployment, says a lot about your character.....or lack of it.

Go to the local unemployment office in your are, take a number, and you will get help when you are called up. Not hard at all.

Go to your local unemployment office and apply and they will sign you up. There is a certain amount of time that you have to work here in KY its 3 months, but every state is different. You do not have to pay the money back. The best thing to do is whith the unemploynebt office and they will answer all your questions.
