My 3mts old was locked in my car. Need emergency tips? |
I had an awful scare this morning. On my way to drop off the rent money, I stepped out of my car to slide the money in the drop box (which was two feet away from my car). It was freezing outside; so, I closed the door so my baby won't get a draft. Once I dropped the money, I noticed my car was locked and the car was running. I have a spare key in my apt. I called the maintenance people of the apartment complex and left a msg so they can give me a key to my apartment (apt office was closed). They didn't respond quickly enough... so my other option was to run to my apartment and try to open a window and non would open. As my last resort, I would have called the police for assistance; but I didn't want to go to jail and have DSS involved because they think I neglected my child. All in all, the maintenance guy finally came and gave me the key to my apartment and I was able to get the spare key to my car. I need a plan of action incase another emergency, any good ideas? Either use the magnetic key box that can be hidden on the undercarriage of the car or (depending on the type of gas tank cover you have) If it can be opened from the outside, you could put a spare key inside where the gas tank is. Most cars now, the gas tank has to be opened by a button inside the car but there are still some that can be opened from the outside. I think the police would have understood. You didn't leave your child unattended. I would have called the police but I am certainly glad that you got everything straightened out. The police would have understood that it was an accident. Should have called the police...it wouldn't be the first time this happened to someone. dont think because you locked your child in your car on accident that dss or anyone would get involved. It happens to alot of people. especially with the automatic locks these days. The only way you would get into trouble is if you left your child in a car to go into a store or something, so next time call the police or look up the number for a pop a lock place (ahead of time of course and keep the number with you at all times) a police officer usually carries something that they can use to unlock your doors. (I locked my dads keys in his truck one time while it was running and a police officer is the one who unlocked it) What a scare! I hate it when something like that happens! Keep a spare key somewhere. I wear one around my neck on a chain cause I locked my self out while walking the dog. You can even get a magnetic box to put the key in and place in somewhere on the outside of the car in a hidden spot. Drill a hole through your spare car door key and take off your license plate. Put the key through the screw that attaches the plate to your car and then put the plate back. The key is hidden between your car and the license plate and you can use a coin to unscrew the plate and get the key if you should ever need it. I did this one time at the mall....I had come out from shopping, and it was summer, I started the car and turned the air on, and then placed my baby in her seat. and then closed the door to put away her stroller and baby bag and my purchases in the trunk, well...I realized that duh...need my key to open the trunk or to push the trunk button in the car....and thats when I tried to open the door and it was locked...the only thing I can think of is that when I placed her in her seat...somehow I hit the lock button on the door (it was an older model honda...so if you hit any of the lock or unlock buttons the whole car would lock or unlock) anyway...I paniced of course and then saw a police officer parked right out front of the mall....I felt soooo stupid and ignorant, but obviously needed help, and he was very understanding and called emergency...which sent a fire truck to unlock my car with a barbell....totally embarassing, but..they got it unlocked, and the air was on, so she was okay for a short while, they never gave me any hassle, and were totally understanding. in your situation it probably won't happen again...as it never did with me, I became a stickler for making sure that I didn't lock the doors when she was in there, but just in case..you can buy a magnet for the underside of your car, and attach a key to it. if need be when shopping or going to work you can take the key and put it in your purse or pocket, but it should be safe there, just put it in a spot that is not easily noticable. and as a last resort..call the police, they won't get dss involved, I mean come on...if someone purposely locked thier child in the car....why then would they call for help? When it happened to me in the Walmart parking lot, I called 911 and they came and jimmied the car. They didn't think I was a bad mom...it was an accident. I shut the door and didnt realize it was locked and forgot I had putmy keys down while I put groceries in the car. Happens all the time! We have had this happen to us before too. I suggest that you get an extra key and tape it under your car. May sound goofy but it'll work. Put it where you only know where it is. But be sure and use something that'll hold it there. Also you may try asking the dealership if they have a device that'll hold it in place. Well better to be safe than sorry, put an extra one in your purse. That is something I have always worried about doing. Go to an auto parts store and buy one of those little magnetic boxes that stick to the bottom of your car and holds a spare key...or you could always keep the spare in your purse or the diaper bag. make sure you leave the door open if the baby is inside, then you wont lock him in I accidentally locked my 3 month old baby in the car yesterday too. It was awful. Luckily, the maintenance man was at our apartment building yesterday and he let me use his phone to call my husband because he has my spare. My husband works only a few minutes away from where we live and he was here in no time. She slept for most of it and she was bundled up so she was ok. It's still scary though. I would suggest (which is what I'm going to do) to always , ALWAYS make sure that you have a key in your purse and you keep it with you or in a pocket or do what the other answers are suggesting. You can always call the police or 911. Usually, towing places can open your doors too. |
