North Carolina Rental Law?

I am moving to an apt complex and everything is OK, I just have to sign the lease.
I called the office today and asked for a copy of the contract, so I wouldn't have to read it in a rush just before signing it.
I was surprised when I was told the lease CANNOT leave the office before being signed. That I would be welcome to stop by and read it there.
I was able to get a copy of the lease from my actual place before signed, and I can't help but think they have something to hide... Is this legal??
Thanks

I probably didn't express myself well. I don't want the actual contract that will be signed. I want a copy, so I can handle it to my personal attorney. I have free attorney service, but would have to pay if they actually have to sit down at the office to read it. And then it would be on me to be sure I am signing what I read...
I am sorry experienced Realtor, but I cannot see any problem with this...

Yes, it's legal, and there is a reason why it can't be removed before it's signed.

With people having computers, color copiers, etc...anything can be changed, signed and THEN returned back. You can bet, they have that policy for a reason.

I have the EXACT same policy...but people are welcome to sit here all day if they want and read it.

100% legal and 100% reasonable.

PS: My question to you is this: Is there a reason why you can't read it at their office?

It is not illegal to have such a policy, but is a great reason to look for another apartment to rent. I am sure if you speak to someone higher up the corporate ladder that you want your lawyer to review any contract you enter into, they will agree to giving you a a copy to peruse at you leisure.
