Is this unusual?

My boyfriend and I went to view an apartment today. We went to the leasing office to inform them that we were here for the appointment. The lady hands me a form and says "this isnt anything official, we just want you to fill this out"
It had name, age, income, social security number, address, major credit cards, vehicle model and license plate #.
This is NOT for an upscale/fancy apartment. Its a small apartment in suburban northeastern Ohio. We wernt filling out an application for the apartment nor signing a lease. We just simply wanted to check out/tour the apartment to see how it was, and we had to give every imaginable detail of personal information. Is this how it works at every apartment?

I would never give my Social Security number to anyone without having a valid reason to. It should be given out sparingly and with valid reason.

They should only be asking for that information if you were filling out an application for the apartment. They would then use this information to run a credit check (valid reason).

Nope...and I sure hope you weren't dumb enough to give them the information.

NO ONE needs your social security number until you have a CONTRACT with them.

NO the only info they need to show you an apartment is your drivers license for security purposes. And your vehicle info if they validate parking. Never give out your SS # just for previewing.

Unless you sign a rental agreement there was no reason for you to disclose anything except for an e-mail address. Now that they have this information what are they going to do with it?
