What do I do about my landlord?

We moved into these apartments about 4 months ago, and since that time, our landlord has had many repairs done in the stairwell just outside our door, without giving any notice to us or our neighboring tenants. Today they were BURNING GLUE off of the stairs with a small blow torch, creating noxiouse gases and fumes. I live in one of the two upstairs units, and all of the smoke and fumes are filling my apartment. My neighbor and I both have small children, and our apartments smell like a burning tire pit! They gave no notice of these actions, and when I whent to the landlords office to complain, they dismissed me rudely and said " well, I don't know what you want me to do about it now! He's already doing it."
We are on a year lease, and already want to move out of this place. It seems that they are constantly doing repairs that are dangerous to the tenants here, without any notice. The last time, they were painting in the stairwell with the doors closed. What do I do?

Talk to your landlord. I am sure this is something that he just did not consider.

hiya I don't know where you are from, but you could seek advice first about what you can do from a local housing office, if you have such a thing about tenants rights and take it from there. The only thing you can do in any country is usually under the jurisdiction of rules and regulations... I am thinking health and safety being some of them. I think you need to talk to someone from any regional office about your rights in the matter. Perhaps persuade other tenants to support you in this. Failing that any advice centres you have in your local area could be able to give you legal advice. Good luck

I think you may want to file a cease and desist complaint with the court system. At least I think they could point you in the right direction. I know there is a way because I have heard of it a few years ago. You can also try talking to the local landlord's association. They might get you the relief you need faster than the courts, if the owner is a member of that association. I know you can withhold rent to motivate action. But, you must deliver your complaint in writing as well as go to the court's window and ask for the proper form.

Call the property owner and let him know what's going on. If this doesn't help, contact the health department.
