Is My Name Legal?

I was divorced in 2003, but kept my married name for professional reasons. I bought a house under my married name. Then, in 2005 I no longer had reason to keep my married name so I decided to change back to my maiden name. Here's what I did:

Went to the Social Security office.
Filled out paperwork.
Cited "divorce" as the reason for the name change.

Weeks later my new Social Security card arrived. I changed my driver's license, all my credit cards and even got a passport in my maiden name. Done and done, right?

Apparently not!

I'm dealing with a land leasing company who refuse to work with me until I give them the "court documents" that prove my name change. I tell them there ARE no court documents and they won't accept that as an answer. They have my SSN on file, and I have my new SS card with my maiden name, but they won't accept that.

Which leaves me to ask all of you: Is my name change legal? Or did I commit fraud by not going to court?

And to make it even more strange, I'm getting married this summer. So I'm not about to file papers in court to take back my maiden name just so I can do it all over again in a few months.

However, this name change thing might make it difficult to sell my house!

i dont really kno!

sry

You have to submit a name change request thru the court system to make it legal

Since you did not request a name change as part of your divorce legally your married name is your name even though you have changed it back to your maiden name on your SS and drivers license etc.

You really didn't commit fraud but to make it legal you need to go to court and request that your name be changed back to your maiden name then you will never have any issues such as you are having now.

No your maiden name isn't legal yet. You have to get a judge to grant permission with payment of $50 or so for court cost and filing fees. Then you will get the documentation that you need to make it legal.

As far as SSI yes your name is legal. But unless it is stated in the divorce papers that you take back your maiden name then you will have to go to court to have it legally change back to your maiden name just to appease some *** hole but you did not commit fraud.

Go have a look here.

Yes, you can use as many Married names as you want My Mother was Married 4 times and she uses her Maiden name and all four of her Married Names including My own last name, want proof one of my former landlord put it all on her Lease, so please use your maiden and Married Name(s) at once so they know who you really are.
