My tap water smells like rotten eggs...? |
I live in an apartment building and have already told the leasing office. The manager said he had the water tested and nothing came back out of the ordinary. Then he said he put tablets in the water to make it fresh...or something like that. But now the smell is back and worse then ever! Could they be running me around with answers? What can the problem be and what should I do about it? Sulfur in water. Take your own sample to a water testing facility. They will be able to offer you a solution. If the building has water treatment equipment, such as a softener of filter, it might need to be maintained. The smell might be a municipal problem, and you'd have to contact the city. There are filter systems that you can have installed in your apartment, but if the whole buildings water supply is contaminated, you shouldn't have to incur that cost. call a good plumber. its sulfer, common problem. Contact environmental health in your area. They will come out and do a test. Also they are objective. It sounds like you have excessive amounts of sulfur in your tap water. Actually you might not have excessive amounts, you might just be more sensitive to it than most people. Try using a water filter (like pur or Brita or something). If it seems really bad it might need to be tested again. Sulfur. Get filters for your taps and showerheads. Consider buying some bottled water, too, and filling up the empties at work or wherever. The anodizing rod in a hot water heater can cause the smell of rotten eggs, this can be removed but would probably void the warranty of the unit. If this is the culprit tank replacement may be necessary. Rotten egg smell is a smell created by sulfur, not uncommon in well water and rarely in a city water source.Ask about the source of your water. If it is from a well ,every tenant is having the same problem. Sulfur in the water is not harmful and you can eliminate the odor by boiling .You might consider a filter which will remove taste and odor and perhaps your landlord would provide one rather than having another vacancy. Check to see if it is mainly the HOT water. Sometimes the water heater is to blame for this. There is a electrode in the water heater that prevents corrosion to the heater but sometimes has an adverse reaction that makes your water smell like rotten eggs. If this is the case then it would be a simple case of removing the rod with a screwdriver and hacksaw. chances are that this smell is not from the water but from the drain where the water is draining into like the bathroom sink. It could be deposits of hair and body grease along with some drain opener that has been used in the past and is still in the trap. try dumping bleach down the drains in the kitchen, bath tub and bath sink about a cup on each twice a day for a couple of days and see if this helps.. |
