What do I do about a toddler being left unattended on a balcony?

Neighbors close by leave a toddler on a balcony to play, unattended, sometimes even with the door and blinds closed. I can see all of this from my window, and sometimes I catch the child leaning through the bars (wide enough to fit through) or standing on top of a chair.

I don't know these people, and don't dare go talk to them myself. I really don't want them to be in trouble...I just want someone to let them know it isn't okay to do that.

Do I just mind my own business? Contact the leasing office? Or what?

I think it's pretty simple - contanct the leasing office. The railings shouldn't be wide enough anyway for the child to fit through so mention to them that if anyhting happens they are looking at a big law suit.

Your lucky you live in a apartment complex and cna just call the leasing office and not in a residential neighborhood then you would have to talk to them yourself, so I think the solution is very easy and you should for sure say something.

Good for you for caring!

Please don't call CPS, you don't want to ruin someone's family you just want to give them a warning. THey may be loving and good parents, they just don't realize this is dangerous.

Dont mind your own business, this childs safey is at stake. Obviously these parents are idiots and dont care. Call child protective services and tell them the situation and what you observed, let them take it from there.

Hmm. This is pretty serious, if the child is gonna fall through the bars! If you don't want to talk to them personally, you can surely send them a note. That way you can at least be sure that they get the message.

police or child services.

No please don't mind your own business this one of those situations where being nosey is benefical you need to contact your leasing and tell them you can always remain anonynomus or you could contact Child Protective Services and they will speak to the parents or you could even call the police.....or just leave a anonynomus note on the door telling the parents how dangerous it is just do something maybe they aren't bad parents but they just don't realize that the bars are big enough for him to squeeze through....

I would deffinately! Call the child sevices or the police. Maybe the police can come while that child is still out there and catch them in the act.

If you don't say something to them directly, which you should, say something to someone. By doing nothing, minding your own business, you are putting the child's life at risk.

Yes, contact social services.
It is too dangerous of a situation to ignore.

Don't mind your business in this situation. This is neglect to leave a child on a balcony and should be taken care of. There are different ways to handle this situation if you don't want to confront the neighbors (which I understand because you don't know how they will react). You can leave them an anon note telling them that they are endangering the life of their child. You can call the police or CPS. You can call the leasing office and let them know. I can just see it now. The child falls and hurts himself (or worse) and THEY sue the complex for neglect on their part.

I would call the cops.

honestly you don't have to make contact with them at all just call child protective services or the police give them this important information something can happen to this little kid and god forbid it from happening but if he falls and hurts him self or even dies you'll be just as guilty for not reporting it. these aren't bad parents who don't deserve their child they are parents who made a mistake and all parents make dumb choices now and again and some times just have to be made aware of them. so maybe if you approach her nicely and tell her what you see they will stop doing it and if she cared for her child she would nicely thank you i know i would if someone made me aware that my toddler wasn't safe. or if your scared just make a simple phone to cps and or the police.. good luck if you do any thing please don't mind your business or turn your head

cps

I would call the police to advise since they're generally less overwhelmed with work load than Child and Family Services, DHS etc,. If they can't advise well then call CFS/DHS etc.

Remember that in most states this child is far less at risk of real injury and death, than the children they do handle... It might not sound nice, but its true. Here in Oregon you can leave your child on the street alone for 6 months before it's abandonment for example, as long as "someone", who can be sued if they don't have the parents permission to care for the child, takes care of the child, which they don't recommend you take care of because you can be sued...

My wife and I had a child this last summer who was abandoned to his dad's house (who he hadn't seen in 6 years), but his dad works out of town so wasn't even home. Of course we took care of him, being sued is no threat to us, but for some social workers its worth abandoning the child to the streets -BECAUSE THEY"RE ALWAYS HANDLING CASES WHERE THE CHILD IS WORSE OFF!!! So to some this seems fine...

Harsh reality, in Oregon animals are abandoned the moment you leave them, children can be homeless for 6 months before it counts.

In other states you have child taken away for firmly telling a child to stop throwing a temper tantrum, and restraining them from damaging product!

Society is due for a major overhaul, people must, and will stop this insanity of ignoring those in need. These extremes are not healthy positions to hold.

With dues respects to your concerns, this child may risk death if you don't call someone, but it may not change anything at their house at all, including what you called about, and children are surviving FAR WORSE every moment of every day. Ever read "A Child Named It"? Yeah that was a bad case, but there are many worse...

Humans have amazing capacity to survive, even thrive...

I hope you understand, the leasing office may have the most influence if they have a policy against that. The departments which deal with crime are still far less persuasive of peoples behavior than money and personal security except when force is used... Sad truth.

God bless.

In this situation I'd call the police or CPS. How would you feel if you do nothing and the child falls and gets hurt or worse? Could you live with your decision then? Call for the childs sake!

OFFER TO BABY SIT.
If that doesnt work, contact the authorities!
