Can my landlord keep my keys to my apartment? |
Okay so this morning...the "cleaning lady" tried to open my door!! She is supposed to be in the apartment across from me and she basically came up to my door instead and tried to open it. I saw her through the peephole and yelled "excuse me" she heard and moved and went on the other door. doesn't sounds as if she was trying to break in. As for your landlord they need to have a key to your place for emergencies and maintenance. Though they are required to give you 24hours notice before entering your apartment for maintenance, in an emergency they can open your apartment as needed. Lots of cleaning personal have keys to get into the homes that they clean. If the apartment complex manager gave her a key then i would guess it only opens the other apt. if he did then i think he can every land lord has keys, thats their job, thats why theyre called Land LORDs, theyre not called Land Submissive Geeks or something As a landlord, they need to have a copy of your key. If you change the locks yourself, you will be fined. If it is a cleaning service, then find out who and complain. Do not take any other matter into your own hands though or you can get in trouble. Yes, it is their property so they are allowed keys, they cannot just come in without warning though, I believe they require 24 hours written notice (well that's what it says on my rent contract) I would read my lease and find out what it says about them holding a key to your aparment . Some leases say what the landlord can and cannnot do . As the landlord actually owns the building they are entitled to keep a key, you cannot change the locks yourself. You can get a sound alarm that will hang on the doorknob and sound out a signal (if armed) when the doorknob is moved, you can find it in your local travel stores. Sounds like an honest mistake, but a landlord has the right to have a key to any rental unit! i guess he's the one u can trust.U're in safe hands sounds suspicious to me .especially if she is not new to the job and knows which apartment is which.keep an eye on her she could be trying to steal something, but if she has been in other apartments and nobody has complained then it could be just a mistake.as long as they change the lock and only you have a key and the head office only has access to the other and not her then let them change it.they do have a right to have a key for emergency reasons only and cannot enter your apartment unless.if you change the lock yourself and don't give them a key if something were to happen where they needed to brake down the door to get in you will be reliable to pay for it. I would talk to the landlord first and if I got no immediate satisfaction, I would change the locks . When you move you can give him the key or give him a key for emergencies only with strict direction that the cleaners do not get a key to your place. If she is working for your landlord, she probably has a master key for all the apartments. They have to have it to enter and clean.Check with him and see what he says. That would be freaky someone just opening the door and coming in...Make sure to write her info down in case you need it in the future.... You are required to provide a landlord with a key to your door. If there were an emergency (your toilet overflowing, and flooding the place, causing all kinds of damage) they HAVE to be able to get in to fix it, and save their investment. My landlord has a set of keys to my house, which i don't agree with. as far as i am concerned whilst i am paying rent it is my house. the front door has 2 locks, i changed the main lock and left the other lock. when the landlord comes round its just a case of removing 2 screws, sliding the one lock out and the other back in. he will never know. if he tries his key in the lock then he is breaking the law by not telling me before coming in. |
