What is the minimum acceptable temperature a landlord must provide for an office building? |
I am leasing a small office without openable windows. The temperature in my office varies from 77 to 80+. I am not always able to control the air conditioning (long story). Are there minimum standards or legal requirements for the landlord to provide me with a comfortable working environment? If she does not provide me with windows that open (my preferred solution), what are my grounds for breaking the 1-year lease I just signed? Thanks! No idea, call the landlord/tenant act or check out their website. Ask the landlord about the thermostat, I'm sure that they would be compliant considering that they lease to you and don't think that they would want to have to continue to have problems with people. Communication is key, just talk to them and ask, if you can't get anywhere go to your municipality office/city office and speak to them about it especially if the landlord is non compliant and if you can't break your lease. see OSHA website If there are no statements on the lease you signed regarding heating or cooling, there is no minimum acceptable temperature the landlord must provide. Likewise, any grounds for breaking a lease should be spelled out in the lease. even if there is no written clause in your lease about temperature, the landlord needs to provide temperature similar to what other similar landlords are offering...77-80 sounds about right, you would have a tough road in court, wait for the lease to expire, and move elsewhere depends on the lease |
