Carpet in my apartment was damaged by a leaky air conditioner what can I do? |
My carpet was soaked and began to smell moldy and of mildew. We called the rental office day after day and they kept saying they would send someone and we waited almost 2 weeks. I'm pregnant and couldn't even sleep in m,y bedroom b/c of the terrible smell (had 2 sleep on the couch). I ended up ripping out the carpet in the room because it was nothing that could be done for it. We had it professionally cleaned & everything. Anyways...our lease will be up in december and I was wondering if we could have it replaced (if so, how?) or should we just leave it as is (i know there is a strong possiblity they will try 2 charge us...but they never came!!!)Thanks in advance Yes, it was THEIR A/C unit. It's the landlord's responsibility to have it fixed. Make sure you document or have some written proof that you have asked them to come fix it before you move out. If they are good company then they won't try and leave you with the charget but you definitely shouldn't be stuck with the cost. ...if you're the renter and "their" A/C caused the leak that damaged the carpet... it's on "them" to fix it... Photograph and document "everything"... I'm betting you're going to have to replace the carpeting. I not only would have called them every single day, I would have gone to the office personally if necessary. They'll probably say it's your word against theirs as far as you calling about the problem. I'd let them know now about it rather than waiting till your lease is up. go to your land lord/manager and tell them straight up the carpet had to be removed. Tell them you understand they were too busy to come and you will be happy to absorb the cost of having it removed, but that you would now like to have it replaced. Smile nicely and hopefully they will make arrangements to fix it. This bluff has a good chance of making them johnny on the spot, since nobody wants to be slapped with a "bill" from some company for removing moldy carpet from a pregnant womans apt. If they are snitty about it, call or threaten to call your local news, usually there is some guy/gal who does local reporting on "bad service" or "rip offs" they would love the opportunity to play you up as the helpless victim. Talk to the rental office one more time & log the dates & conversations you had with the office. I will say that if the carpet is missing from the bedroom, you may be held responsible. This is not really relevant to the issue, but water that drips from an air conditioner is usually condensation, and not from a leak. |
