HELP!!! Should I take my dentist to small claims court or contact the dental society?

My dentist put in my two front crowns. Everything about them was perfect except the shade, which I didn't see was off until I left his office.
He and the lab agreed to remove my crowns and redo them since it was their fault with the shade.
My dentist cemented the second set in two days ago. As he was doing this he put a finishing strip up the middle of my two front teeth because he said there was excess cement. I immediately showed him my concern as he was doing that because I was worried about a space down the middle.

He told me not to stop him that he was doing his job.

Today I got home to a letter in the mail with him telling me that he is dropping me as a patient because there is no patient/doctor trust between us.

Sure enough I was right, there is a space big enough down the center of my two crowns where I have to keep pulling food out of. It isn't noticable by looking at it unless you are watching me floss, but it is there none the less.

What should I do?

you must have really fingered him badly when getting treated or he will not go all the way to send you the letter. We need gaps in between teeth so that we can floss & clean the area. If the gap is closed it will be like food trapped inbetween & cause discomfort. Always the other dentist will clame their work is better.

Why would you not want space to floss? Flossing is good to do anytime. Maybe you are too self conscious.
Seek out another dentist and report it to your insurance company. See what they will do since they may be paying for most of it.

Ok, here was the first mistake that happened, and I feel most of it was his doing. He should have tried the crowns in, I don't know if they were full porcelain or porcelain fused to gold, however there is a try in paste specifically for this. The crowns could have been tried in, you could have looked at them in a mirror, and even gone outside in natural light to view the shade. If this had been done there would have been no cementation of the crowns and no need to cut them off. They would have simply been sent back to the lab to have the shade changed. The crowns could have been put on with temporary cement also, and you could have worn them for a week or so and then when you chose to redo them, they wouldn't have needed to be cut off.

The finishing strip you mention, is used often in dentistry, however I have assisted in many many many cementation cases and very rarely have we needed to use one to remove cement. Sounds to me like he allowed the cement to get too hard before he started cleaning it off. I always make sure that I start removing the excess cement before it starts getting too hard. Otherwise, it is very difficult to remove.

There is a material that can be used to bond composite material (Tooth colored filling material) onto a porcelain crown, it is by APEX dental. However, this is normally not used in the interproximal area, between the teeth, and I don't believe that it would work in your case. They simply need to be remade again. Meaning cutting them off and starting over with a new impression and sending that to the lab for new crowns.

Every state is different on "firing a patient" which is what he did with you. A dentist must provide alot of documentation as to why they are firing a patient from their practice, and must provide emergency care for a specified period of time after that. In my state, it is 30 days.

What you can do now is to contact your states dental board. To locate them, google the name of your state and dental board. You would then find a link to file a complaint. An investigator would be sent to his office to review with him the problem and the reasons for firing you as a patient. If it isn't settled, a review board, consisting of actual dentists, would review the case and determine guilt and if he is in fact found liable for the problem, they might recommend that he refund your money, or you might have to take their findings to an actual court for a judgement. I would start out with the state dental board before going to small claims court.
