Why can't someone just be straight with you and tell you the real deal?

My boyfriend is great in most aspects but one thing that really annoys me is that he fibs to me about one particular thing. He likes to tell me that he's going back to his business office to work when he really decides to go out drinking with a friend! He doesn't go out often, probably just once a month which is really no big deal. I know couples need time and space to do there own thing from time to time but why lie about it?

I just want to clarify that I do not smother him or make demands and that we live together and have a child so my place is his place.

He shouldnt lie to you. Let him know you are all for him having his alone time, but that you dont appriciate him lying to you. If he continues lying, ask yourself if you really want to be with him.

Is his friend a male or female? Lying is lying no matter if it is big or small. If he'll lie about something small what do you think is going to happen when something major comes up that he doesn't want to tell you? He does not want a confrontation so he lies to keep from having to explain his actions. If that is the way you want to live, then by all means be miserable your entire life. Otherwise find someone you can trust and forget about the one you're with now. This is about more than doing separate things away from your partner. There is a reason he is lying and if he won't tell you when you ask, then how can you trust him? Good luck!
