New doggy help! Separation anxiety problems?

We just adopted a 7 mo old GSP from a couple who could not care for her. She came to us last night. By all appearances they were very good pet owners, but felt their dog was too unhappy where they live. We live in the country and will be getting electric fence in the next couple of weeks, so she will have plenty of running space. Meanwhile, she is whining, groaning, whimpering and howling. We have an older dog who needs some peace and quiet, so I am not allowing puppy upstairs where my home office is. So far, she has spent several hours today sitting at the gate and doing nothing but whine and cry. We do have another young dog she could play with, but apparently she'd rather do this. She also howled a lot in her kennel last night. No sleep for us. She seems very, very needy. I took a nap earlier and she crawled up in my lap, put her head on my chest and her front paws around my waist and slept right along with me. Any ideas how I can work with her?

Good for you for giving her a new home!

Right now she is probably scared witless over not being with her family and is howling and crying for them. Dogs usually need maybe 3 days - week to adjust to a new situation. She may not eat very much either so be prepared for that.

When I got one of our doggies she got up every 2 hrs the first night and ran back and forth in the house. I kept getting up to get down on the floor with her to console her.

Give her a routine that is the same each day. And if you can get anything from her other home, like a bed, a blanket with her smell or the smell of her former owners, food bowl, anything that will help.

Things should ease up in a few days - so I wouldn't judge her on what you are seeing now.

play with her as much as you can and she will probly forget about them but not completly just not whine and cry as much so try to get some rope toys kong toys anything and play with her as much as you can and she will probly stop
