Invasion of personal space?

well, how would you react if someone of the opposite sex, that you didnt know but goes to the same school or office as you suddenly came up to you for a small talk and gets closer and closer by the second until theres very little space between your faces? :|

lol. maybe they are violating norms on purpose! i had this for an assignment...i was supposed to talk to five random people,,,and come closer...and closer...and closer. lol! just to see the similarities and differences of how people react...the more you know they person, apparently, the more it is likely to be okay to violate these norms. try it. it's fun! lol

I have had that happen. I keep stepping back and if they keep coming closer I finally say, "Am I speaking too softly for you to hear me...... (pause and wait for their purrlzed look and then say). You keep getting closer and closer to me... I thought maybe you couldn't hear me...... I'm not comfortable w/ people being kind of 'in my face.' " or something along those lines.... Plan what you are going to say now so that when it happens you are "ready."

It definitely is an invasion of space. I think I would try to be polite as possible and just cover my mouth and say, "Oops, don't get to close. I feel a cold coming on and I don't want anyone else to get it."

If that doesn't work, just be straightforward and say, "Hey there, could you back away a bit?"

If they respond rudely or say something like, "Why?" or "No", feel free to tell them that you don't like people in your face. At some point, we have to let people know that their actions are not okay. I usually stop worrying about being polite when the other person has been reminded to be polite and doesn't stop, or is flat out rude. However, I do try to take the high road and remain classy in the situation, so that it can't be taken any other way when the offender explains the situation to their friends/family.

Some people seem to have NO IDEA of others' personal space. I don't like people touching me uninvited, or examining my jewelery etc.- it's just rude and ill-mannered. I usually deal with it by stepping back as well.
