Where is most of the used space on the computer?

my computer has a toatal of 140 gb harddrive
now after installing tha basic stuff (antivirus, antispyware, Office 2003, etc.) i should have at least 100 gb of space

i tried to delete and uninstall all that unnecesarry stuff
but now i only have 80 gb of space

what is it that is atking up so much space
what can i do do really get rid of watever is clogging my caomputer
is there a hidden folder with junk stuff? or wat?

You say your computer has a 140 GB hard drive. I assume by this, you mean the specs stated it had a 140 GB hard drive installed.

Your available space will always be smaller than the stated size. This is for a variety of reasons. First of all, capacity is sometimes stated using the value of 1 GB = 1 billion bytes, but according to the correct definition 1 billion bytes is only about 0.93 GB. In other words, there are multiple definitions of a GB, and this can be confusing. A drive with a capacity of 140 billion bytes actually only holds about 130.39 GB.

Furthermore, not all of the disk space is available; part of it is used for directories and allocation tables. This space, although included in the capacity rating of the drive, will not be reported by your operating system.

It is also possible that your 140 GB drive has been split into several volumes. New computers often have a D:\ volume which is used to store restore data in case your operating system crashes or some of your vital system files are corrupted. If you open your My Computer window and see a D:\ drive (with a hard disk icon), your hard disk is probably divided into two volumes and your C:\ drive will not have the full capacity of the disk. If the D:\ drive is your CD drive, this is not the situation in your case.

Your operating system also takes up space, of course. How much will depend on your operating system; XP should not take too terribly much, but Vista will take a significant chunk. Your applications will take up space also; the Add/Remove Programs window should list the amount of space consumed by your various applications. Finally, and I leave this for last because it is perhaps most obvious, your data files take up space. Movies particularly take a lot of space; MP3s can also take quite a bit of space if you have a lot of them. Photos, if you have a very high megapixel camera, could take up some space but you would have to have a lot of pictures in order to make a noticable dent in your disk space.

Anyway, I hope this helped.

Could be your operating system (especially if its Vista) or a separate partition on the hard drive

check your add/remove programs by size,, start with the highest megabyte application and see if you need it ,if not just remove it,, sounds like you have some trial games installed

80gb still alot
how can we know whats clogging up your computer we need to be on it

check your games updates etc. they can build up

it is your programs pre buit in...you wireless adapter, intel or amd really loads up and ur os. dont so any deleting of that stuf or your comp will crash. dont worry if you run out of space just go with an external hard drive.

I have the following installed on mine:
Windows Vista - with all Microsoft Updates that are available
Antivirus - McAfee
Office 2007
Company of Heroes
Warcraft 3

My system is using 36Gb of disk space just for that. I've not even pushed it yet, as I have loads of other stuff to get on...

Recommended course of action for you...buy a larger harddrive, slave the harddrive on your machine, and use that as your data storage area.
