Can i move my USPS mail box closer to the house?

Our mail box is currently on a post with 3 of our neighbors boxes. We would rather have it at the end of our walkway on our property so it is not so close to everyone else boxes. Peope on the rest of the road have their own space. Do we have to contact someone at the post office to ask permission to move it?

You will have to contact the Postmaster of your Delivery office and make a formal request.

I wouldn't be too confident though. If it is a Rural Route Carrier, part of the criteria for their rate is the number of stops. Moving your box will add a stop to the route.

Many PMs are reluctant to allow changes like that, especially if it has been that way for many years. To get around that, you would have to prove a hardship on your part in retrieving your mail from where the mailbox is now.

Simply requesting this sort of change for the reason you seem to be getting at is unlikely to be approved. USPS doesn't put a lot of stock in the "everyone else is doing it" thing.

Ask your mailman. If others have their boxes near their house you will probably be allowed to also.

If your mail is delivered by vehicle (postman does not get out) then no, you need to have it at the roadway. 4 mailboxes on post tells me someone was trying to save money or the Post Office claimed that area was the only safe place for the carrier to stop at.
