The back space key no longer deletes selected text, in word2003. How can I restore this function?

The back space key deletes selected text in all office documents and in explorer but no longer in word. The Paste function will no longer delete selected text either. How can I restore this function?

Try this:
Goto Tools -> Options
Click on Edit Tab
Make sure that "Typing replaces selection" is checked.

Click Ok.

Now try backspacing a selected text.
