Why do people tend to park in the same space every day?

In the office parking lot, some people park their vehicles in the same space every day. These can be anywhere in the car park, and have no perceivable benefit (e.g. less distance to walk to the building). The spaces are free for anyone to use, and none of them are allocated or numbered.

In addition, some of these people feel violated if someone else parks in "their space".

Basic psychology , Humans (and animals) tend to repeat actions that have resulted in successful outcomes. Also they tend to avoid actions that result in failure/no reward.
But every now and again they do something completely novel just to mess up scientists results.

habitual people

These people either resist change or are very territorial. Personally, I'm the prior.
*400th answer! Woohoo!*

Because people are creatures of habit. You could use a nuclear device and it still wouldn't dislodge the habit. People feel comfortable, nay, must have, nay, demand routine! Variation? That would be terrifying!

Well first off they wont have to remember where they park in the morning. (Not many people are morning people) And people do not take well to change so maybe it gives them a sense of security. WHO KNOWS??

Arent people weird! Move their stapler and watch the sparks fly.

People are creatures of habit, live with it.

I do that. I park in the same space every day in a 2-floor parking garage. I don't get wildly upset when someone else parks in my spot, but I do say to myself, 'Oh, man! Someone took MY spot!" Why do I do this? Because I like the spot.

My car is very safe in my spot, it won't get hit. It's slightly out of the way because I hate running into co-workers on the way into and/or out of work (I'm a bit of an anti-social person). My spot is open every day when I get there (unless I'm running late) and I don't have to leave the keys with the parking attendant.

So, while the benefits may not be perceivable to you, I assure you, they are to the person who parks there.

Have you noticed that animals tend to pee usually at the same spot. Territorial marking they say. We humans are much the same.

It makes it easier for me to remember where I parked.
