Disk Space Question?

I keep losing disk space and I don't understand why. I have tried everything I can think of to resolve it (deleting everything I can, all files, photos, temp files, programs I don't need, and even some I do, ran disk clean up, etc.) To give an example of what is happening, last nite after removing MS Office, which I really needed, but will have to settle for using Google docs, I had 380 MBs of space left. Since then my pc has been on but I've only checked a few things on yahoo (like Weather and Y! Answers) and then nothing at all until this morning, (approximately 7 hours later in total) and I have gone down to 260MBs. Is this normal???

Thank you all for the answers so far!

mar005133970, this sounds like exactly what is happening, but I can't figure out how or what! Is it bad that my copy of windows is apparantly not genuine? This has prevented me from being able to update it. (It's a second hand pc, I'm a poor student, lol)

LEFT & Dilshan P, I am so hoping it's not a virus, but fear it might be. Right now I have AVG which tells me after scanning that everything is okay, but I'm still leery.

In total I have a capacity of 6.31 GBs of space, but it says 6.03 GBs of it are used and I can't figure out what is taking up all that space when I have deleted almost everything! Is there something else I should look for to delete?

your computer could be downloading something without you knowing. if you havent updated windows yet, then it could be updating or another program could be doing it.

You need to try defragmentating your disk.

try deleting your Internet temporary files in c:\ under documents and settings. My Internet temporary files can eat up to 2000mbs depending on how much you put it. It can be adjusted in the Internet options. with best regard.

This is abnormal.
what I think is you got virus or a kind of program that keeps adding trash file into your hard drive.
try to use anti-virus to scan the entire computer and kill them.
I have a little program that can help you to clean the unnecessary files. if you trust me, throw me your email and i will send it to you. no virus attached. However, if there is a virus in your computer, this program won't help a lot. but it's worth to give a try.
if the problem still occuring, please reinstall your OS. (i mean format your whole hard drive)

Delete your temporary internet files by opening Disk Cleanup for C:\ and view the files and delete.
Your computer might be updating a program or maybe automatic updates. Something must be being downloaded to your disk without you knowing. Try a virus scan too, Anti-Virus programs can be found on the net(buy download)

Defrag...start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmenter.
When your hard disk is left without defragging, the disk will use alternate open spaces instead of specific file clusters, it uses more space each time you open files and programs which reduces available capacity to data and slows performance.
