Is it legal to reside in an office building you own?

The housing prices in my area are unreal. There is a small office building on the edge of town located in a commercial zone for sale. I can afford it. It has more than enough space for my family, two bathrooms, a garage, a private parking lot and a kitchen. It is zoned "general manufacturing" and currently used as an office building. There are no apartment buildings in the area. We do have a home business. Is it legal to live there?

It really depend on the rules and regs where you live. Where I live it is zoned commercial, but you can live there as long as you have a business in your house. You'd have to call the powers that be in your area to be sure.

as long as its not a resturant

Depends whether it is zoned as residential. Ask a realtor,

I would say no simply because of the fact that it is zoned comercial. The two bathrooms, and garage dont mean much in the eyes of the law im sure......... The fact that you own it may change some of the circumstances but, were i live it doesnt matter.

dont tell

Why don't you call the city zoning department and ask to have the property rezoned? There has to be an ordinance that covers multi-use (retail & residential for example) buildings, and my guess is that other people have done the same thing.

Usually no. Like the other answers check with SF zoning.

I used ot won a building out there and lived in it. Was it illegal yes? Did anyone know, no...

I could be. Check with city zoning. I'm 60% sure they'll tell you that as long as you have a dedicated space for the business and maybe even draw them a floor plan, they'll OK it. They'll probably ask you tons of other questions too. Just cover your a--.

Hard to say if it's zoned commercial, you really need to call the city and ask
