I am self-employed. Should I apply for a DBA, LLC, or a SCORP.?

I am a visiting home health nurse (Licensed Vocational Nurse). I go to see patients in their homes. For this reason, I have travelling expenses. Also, I have to document the services that I provide. I have an office space at home which I use to complete all the paperwork needed in connection with my job as a nurse. In doing the documentation and in organizing all the paperwork related to my work, I use a lot of office supplies. Sometimes I also have to buy supplies such as gloves, stethoscopes, sphygmomanometer, cotton pads, penlights, etc. Someone advised me to just apply for a Fictitious Name (need to apply for a DBA). However, somebody else told me I had to apply for an LLC; while another person advised me to apply for an SCORP.

It depends on what state you're in, how you want the business structured, etc. I suggest doing some reading on the subject...

I posted a couple links to informative articles about business structures.

Corporations, llcs, partnerships, etc. are done through your Secretary of State -- I put a link to a directory of Secretary of State links. Fictitious names are filed at your County Clerk's office.

Check out the Small Business Administration web site -- they're a great resource for the small business owner.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your endeavors!
